Walt Disney World Announces Plans For Its 50th Anniversary Celebration Starting Later This Year

Walt Disney DIS DIS Wo DIS rld has announced some of their plans for the theme park destination’s 50th anniversary, which starts October 1, 2021. The celebration is set to last for 18 months and feature new merchandise, attraction openings, and more across all four Walt Disney World theme parks and dozens of resorts.

One major thing the sprawling resort is doing is coining a new term, “EARidescence.” This will play out in the shimmering and sparkling decorations around all four parks, and likely on merchandise available throughout the anniversary year. At Magic Kingdom, Cinderella Castle will be getting another upgrade with gold bunting on the newly painted spires and a 50th anniversary crest over the clock face. Other park icons like Epcot’s Spaceship Earth and the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park will also get an upgrade with nighttime projections and lights.

Disney costume designers have also been hard at work creating new outfits for Mickey and Minnie Mouse with the “EARidescent” look. Their new outfits combine custom-made fabric with gold trim and gold shoes.

The milestone celebration will likely bring in more visitors than Walt Disney World has seen since reopening after an extended closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. As announced during the most recent Disney earnings call, all four Walt Disney World theme parks are currently operating at 35 percent capacity, and will likely remain that way through much of 2021, making theme park reservations at a premium for the weeks following the kickoff of “The World’s Most Magical Celebration.”

As the event continues into 2022 more guests will likely be allowed to enter the gates of the four theme parks as capacity is increased due to a higher rate of coronavirus vaccination. The celebration could not come at a better time for Disney as their theme parks are looking for a way to increase revenue after being closed for months. With sales from new tickets, merchandise, themed food and drink options, hotel stays, and more, it’s likely that the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World will shift the tide for Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products segment.

More announcements about “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” will be made as October 1 draws closer.
