In another look back at social trends of the previous year, Twitter has revealed that people in the U.S. tweeted about BTS more than any other musical act, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has been following the South Korean boy band’s meteoric rise from trendy phenomenon to serious, sturdy hitmakers.
The social platform confirmed the K-pop titans hold atop the list of the most tweeted about musical acts, and it’s not their first time earning that honor. This is the fourth year in a row the seven-member vocal band has landed at No. 1, and they’ve only become more and more popular with each passing 12-month period.
Impressively, BTS beat out a number of stars who are arguably better known in the U.S., such as Kanye West, Beyoncé and Drake, who come in at Nos. 2, 3 and 4, respectively. All those musicians have larger discographies and many more hit singles in America, but BTS still come in first place when looking at chatter on Twitter.
Behind Drake, three additional South Korean groups appear next, one right after another, proving just how popular the genre has become on Twitter, especially in the U.S. Coming in at Nos. 5, 6 and 7, respectively, are Ateez, NCT and EXO.
Rounding out the top 10 list is a rapper (Megan Thee Stallion, No. 8), a rocker (Harry Styles, No. 9) and the biggest Latin musician on the planet (Bad Bunny, No. 10).
Twitter didn’t share numbers connected to each musician in its graphic, but it’s safe to assume the difference between BTS and, say, Harry Styles and Bad Bunny, is noticeably large, as the K-pop icons seem to go viral in the U.S. not only when they announce something special or drop new music, but...pretty much whenever fans decide to make them a trending topic.
These were the most tweeted about musicians in the U.S. in 2020.
