An American Green Beret was killed in action in Afghanistan on Monday, the first U.S. combat death since President Donald Trump decided to call off peace talks with the Taliban earlier this month.

"The loss of Sgt. 1st Class Griffin is felt across the 1st Special Forces Group Family and the entire Special Forces community," said Col. Owen Ray, commander, 1st Special Forces Group , in a statement."He was a warrior - an accomplished, respected and loved Special Forces Soldier that will never be forgotten. We ask that you keep his Family and teammates in your thoughts and prayers.

For months, the U.S. had been negotiating a peace deal that would potentially bring an end to the 18-year war in Afghanistan, the longest war in American history. However, a car bomb -- claimed by the Taliban -- that killed an American soldier in Kabul last week caused the president to cancel the talks.
