• Singer Charlotte Awbery wowed commuters and the Internet with an unexpected cover of "Shallow" from A Star Is Born.
  • Awbery effortlessly sang the Oscar-winning song that Lady Gaga made famous after a video creator randomly pulled her aside for a segment of "Finish the Lyrics."

Rome wasn't made in a day, but Internet stars can be.

At least, that's the case for Charlotte Awbery, who gained instant virality and a cult following after she unexpectedly belted out Lady Gaga's "Shallow" in the subway. Video creator Kevin Freshwater discovered the singer while filming his segment, "Finish the Lyrics," in which he prompts random strangers to finish the lines of a song he's singing.

After Awbery bashfully yet effortlessly completes the lyrics of the Oscar-winning song, a stunned Freshwater encourages her to continue. "Wow," he says in the clip. "Keep going."

She does, easily crescendoing to the climax of the song that gave Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born its emotional pulse. Freshwater laughs seemingly incredulously at the end of her makeshift performance, adding, "You're brilliant! Are you a singer? Oh, my God, you're amazing."

Soon after the video went viral, the single off the Star Is Born soundtrack reportedly reentered the Top 40 on iTunes in the United States, landing at the number 30 spot.

Although the Internet just discovered Awbery, she has actually been working as a professional singer for some time. Various videos uploaded to her Instagram account show her singing at events and covering classics like "Purple Rain" by Prince and "Love Is on the Way" by Celine Dion. Her impromptu subway performance also wasn't her first time covering Gaga.

The Internet quickly took notice of Awbery's strong vocals, crowning her the future of pop.
