Welcome to #TBT Mixtape, Billboard’s series that showcases artists’ very own throwback-themed playlists exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. The curated set features the artists’ favorite tracks from their youth and childhood.
This week’s edition is from Angie McMahon. The Australian singer-songwriter has been in the midst of a stateside promotional blitz following the release of her debut album Salt last summer via Dualtone Records (Chuck Berry, The Lumineers). The record debuted in the top 5 on Australia’s ARIA chart ranking, and also the country’s No. 1 vinyl release that week.
Her breakthrough year included winning Best Developing Act at last year’s SXSW, following past honorees Anderson .Paak, Courtney Barnett, Haim, and Leon Bridges, and she also inked a U.S. tour supporting Hozier, including a five-night stint at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom. She has previously supported The Pixies, Father John Misty, Gary Clark Jr., Alanis Morissette and Mumford & Sons on tour dates.

She closed out 2019 with the release of a special cover of Fleetwood Mac‘s “Silver Spring,” recorded with her bandmates at Nashville’s The Shoebox studio, and engineered by Ben Cramer (Old Sea Brigade) and Owen Lewis. The song was initially meant for just her “tour diary,” she explains, but she decided to release it anyway. “Thanks to Ben and Owen for recording this and giving us such a nice visit to their studio, to [manager] Charlotte Abroms for the idea, and to Stevie Nicks for my favourite song,” she says.
Today, Angie McMahon put together this week’s #TBT Mixtape, to give fans a glimpse of her early musical influences. The eclectic set includes tracks by Lissie, Vance Joy, k.d. lang and others.
“Each of these songs has featured strongly in a chapter of my life,” says McMahon. “I’m not sure that there’s a sonic trend among them, but when each one of these songs crossed my path, it stayed with me for a long time. Some of them I’ve referred back to when making my own songs, and some of them have just sat with me as memories, as tunes that I will always admire. I will always love you…”
