Billie Eilish is always down to explore the unknown, whether it’s through her haunting, genre-redefining pop music or her studiously casual, impeccably designed signature style. Nor did the Vogue cover star flinch at the prospect of being interviewed by artificial intelligence; Eilish is more than game, even if her interlocutor does begin by calling her “Billie Eyelash.” (Well, it’s still learning.)
Decked out in Prada from bucket hat to sneaker tip, Eilish faces questions that are more existential and abstract than the norm. “What are you like?” the bot asks. “What are you missing out on?” But while they are unconventional, the questions aren’t necessarily random: They’re based on the 170 million search results available online for Eilish’s name.
It all makes for a conversation unlike any you’ve seen before. The AI questions may come out a little odd at times—“How much of the world is out of date?”, it asks at one point—but Eilish always responds thoughtfully: “Shaming people for wearing what they want is out of date. Calling every black artist ‘urban’ is out of date.” Eilish also reminisces about her history with social media, waxes nostalgic about watching the stars near Lake George, and recalls wearing a wig to go incognito in public.
