While some Republican lawmakers say this is about giving parents more choice, Democrats argue it won't and will only hurt public options.

Proposals in Austin could give parents thousands of dollars to cover the cost of a private school but tuition. But some fear it won't give options.Proposals in Austin could give parents thousands to cover the costs of private education. But opponents fear it won't actually give options, and it will only help families already enrolled in private schools. When it comes to where to send their children to school, some parents want more options.

Middleton's bill gives parents $10,000 per student. This is money that can be used for tuition, technology, and transportation expenses. Others aren't sure this gives parents more options. Even with a voucher, it may be not enough to cover costs. "Now, if we have these schools and they're private, we can't shut them down," Children at Risk activist, Dr. Bob Sanborn, explained. "What you're doing is draining the system of these public education dollars to schools that are going to be questionable at best."Private school leaders see it differently. At Xavier Academy in Houston, officials said private options are great alternatives to public schools.

"This bill empowers parents, and the right thing to do is put tools in the hands of parents when deciding for themselves," Middleton said.

Why not give parents more competitive options over failing school districts. Teachers tend to do their jobs when their feet are held to the fire.

The K-12 system in Houston is terrible. When we lived there, my wife taught English composition at a community college. The literacy levels of college students there was stunningly bad.

And how exactly would SchoolChoice hurt public options?

Houston schools are an absolute disaster. Democrats shovel money in to failing schools and see no improvement. I won’t listen to democrats on this issue, they’re clueless

We apparently have trillions of dollars for everything under the sun. But money for school vouchers? Nope. Why does everything suck so bad?

did you guys ask this representative why he opposes school choice for others while sending his own kids to private school

Teachers unions have destroyed public schools teaching ' woke' nonsense. Gender, race BS.

It’s long past time for vouchers that truly give all families options. Our schools aren’t safe with edu policies that r complete failures because of 0 consequences. The edu bar on actual edu is abysmal & setup only 2 fool parents their children r achieving when their not….1/

It won’t be enough to pay for for-profit private schools which can deny any child. This is about making free schooling not free.

Maybe Democrats need to get the schools back to teaching more - that is what a school is supposed to do.

Why trap kids in failing schools because of their address? Are these results acceptable? Fund students, not systems!

RepWalle vouchers are a fundamental threat to our democracy? Teach me this one Armando DeAngelisCorey
