The Fawcett Society is calling for a change in the law to try to cut down on instances of unequal pay.The call comes asFawcett Society chief executive Sam Smethers said:"Pay secrecy means women cannot know if they are being paid equally and fairly. She said that women need an enforceable"right to know" what their colleagues earn so that they can challenge unequal pay.

Shanti Kelemen, investor director at Brown Shipley, told BBC Radio 4's Programme that it should be"all or nothing".

Not so long ago people didn't talk about how much they earned and in some places of work it was not alowed. Now-a-days every one wants to know then get jealous if not getting the same. Even though the jobs look the same they often aren't.

I once helped my co worker to order & tidy his work reports that he kept in a carrier bag, they were a mess! Then later on, i found out he was getting double my wages for same job AND a free parking space!!! EqualPay transparency

Oh look... Read the article and it's another cockamamy Labour-inspired initiative.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha

Or... you can easily look at what the benchmarking is for your role and discuss with your employer your worth.

Have we become a communist state? Even. There some animals are more equal than others.

GDPR

How does that recognise differences in experience, education, skills knowledge. Only applicable if exact like for like match.

Should men be able to see female colleagues’ pay I want to know?

NO! They’ll all see that I’m on even less than Pedro. Our bathroom attendant

Imagine when they get to see that they get paid the same or more as male colleagues doing the SAME job. They will lose their shit

Who is charity?

Why? So they can laugh at being paid more than me!!

ALL pay should be private

Nope. Just pay them the same

Its rude to ask a woman her age and it's also rude to ask anyone how much they earn regardless of gender, race or sexuality etc

And vice versa i take it..

Mind your own business is my response

Introducing the equivalent of the Swedish pay transparency law would solve this genderpaygap

So it should work the other way around as well if such a thing was implemented

Pay is a private contract between employer and employee, whether male or female. If two people work at different speeds, they cannot be paid the same. Some people are paid more because they are irreplaceable. Some people are are more as they are family or for their experience.

MyriamFrancoisC For a large organisation, ie a FTSE100 company, women and men at the same level get paid the same. Eg if you're a finance analyst in the same business unit as a colleague, both would be paid the same. Disparity kicks in if you become a senior F A or finance manager.

Be careful what you wish for.

Men should declare themselves women.... women can declare themselves men .... then men can have babies ... what a wonderful world ...

Oh get stuffed

Some woman earn more than men doing the same job. Competent people get more they work for it you want more you do a decent job.

But that’s not the main driver of the gender pay gap. Women choose to work less hours so when you compare the average wages they will always be lower.

Show me theirs I'll show them mine.....or doesn't it work like that because in some way it would be sexist and demeaning?

Regardless of gender pay shud b transparent for all.

Starting with the BBC male and female salaries. How many females are on the £600,000 John Humphries earns, no wonder they keep putting up the licence!

It’s nobodies business but that person and their boss!

I am a woman and I totally disagree. Where is confidentiality? It is up to the companies to have a code of conduct where everyone is treated equally without infringing on peoples privacy.

No they shouldn't.

Absolutely not, all that I knew of my colleagues’ wage was basic rate, take home pay was none of my business

It is illegal to pay men and women differently for the same role

Sexist.

In Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt's - case ? NM's on £300 K and he's on £150 K ...?

No chance...

Yay equality! Where one gender has the right to see anothers personal information.

You accept your pay when you sign your contract. Simple right?

What I get paid is strictly between me and my employer, it's of no business to anyone else.

Do you think it should be transparent for everyone or only women to have this privilege ?

What happened to privacy? No one should know what other people earn.

Only just let my wife see what I earn let alone some women who thinks she might deserve more

Haha the number of men on here going ape shit because their female colleagues might find out they're being underpaid. You should willingly share the info or you're part of the problem.

There is no unequal pay for the same job in the same circumstance. Its all a lie.

Im all for equal pay. The fact women sometimes get lower pay for doing the same job with same experience is utterly disgusting. But this is bloody ridiculous! I remember when such things used to be private. If anyone has a problem with their pay take it up with your boss.

I did, and it was not funny to find out.

Where I work, we are all paid the same and it's all open and honest. Not that I care, as long as I have the money I need. Envy never made any sense to me.

I absolutely agree in principle that women should receive equal pay as male counterparts doing exactly the same job or work agreed by ALL 'to be of equal value'. But isn't this best tackled by simply displaying a list of all current experiential pay scales for all posts/jobs?

Why not make employers publish all employees pay from top to bottom on a notice board and everyone including the public could have access to it. This way the employers may be embarrassed into paying a fair wage.

*Colleagues should be able to see colleagues’ pay, says equality There, fixed it for you

Fact. Everyone’s pay should be published by the tax authorities. It should all be public record so that businesses can’t take advantage of workers in negotiations.

WTF?! No one should be able to see anyone else's pay!

It should be equal and then they wouldn’t have to

They should all mind their own business!

Why ... why should anybody see anyone else pay irrespective of gender.

And they’ll be shocked to see they’re getting the same hourly rate but working vastly different hours

I don’t agree

We should all see each others pay.

No one gender should have a right that their counterpart doesn't have. That includes earning more, and seeing other's wages. It's down the the employer to balance it, not just the female employees.

I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours.

Recently I heard about a company called GrantTree where everyone knew each others pay and went so far as to allow staff to dictate their own worth....but it was open to the entire company to discuss. Basically people put their case forward for pay rises and they self regulated.

And will we get to see theirs in return?

Privacy Laws

Can we also have a matching dress code so that when we are forced to wear shirt (and tie) and trousers all summer the women in the building turn up as though they are on holiday in light clothes and flip-flops?

And what of positive discrimination in favour of less qualified women in promotion stakes?

I don't get this. Why just women? Next it'll be blacks, then young people, then old people. What a person is totally confidential. Some spouces don't even know what each other earn. My business, and mine alone.

metooism

And vice versa

No in any form what you get paid is your business

Typical leftwing crap promotion from the BBC. Can you imagine the outrage if the story was about men should be allowed to see what women earn.

They should get on the trans bandwaggon. Identify as male and get a pay rise!

And we all should be able to see the bosses pay too

Did they say anything about men should be able to see female colleagues pay? Of course not.

That’s discrimination. I wanted equal pay with some of my male colleagues who had less experience, knowledge and ability.

And male should be able to see female colleagues pay👍 EqualityForAll

Um, most companies don't want you to see your coworkers' pay regardless of gender. If that happens, merit increases could become a thing of the past. Long term, it could lead to a flattening of wages and make it more difficult to advance.

The world and especially Britain has gone totally mad recently! What is going on?🤷🏻‍♂️

All pay should be openly available to all staff. The culture of not discussing pay only favours companies that use divide & rule tactics.

Women shld not have to pay any tax out of the equal pay when they get it as well.

Why not How else to detect pay discrimination?

🤦‍♂️

only if they are willing to show theirs

I agree

And men should be able to see the work done by women. Close the gender work gap and the pay gap will close itself.

No one got any right to see what anyone is paid

Yours first bbc

Nobody should know anybody else's pay. It is a private matter. Even my mother didn't know what my father earnt.

'Treat women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers' - Muhammad Gods Messenger 'Treat women kindly, if you hate a thing in them, it may be that you dislike a thing while God has placed in it alot of good' - Quran 4:19

and men should be able to do the same then ?

Imagine the shock theyll get when they see their male colleagues get the same as they do!

No.

Bullshit.
