A woman has been found guilty of assisting the female genital mutilation of a three-year-old British girl during a trip to Kenya, becoming the first person to be convicted in England over committing the crime overseas.
Her crime only came to light years later when the victim told her English teacher what had happened when she was 16 in November 2018. Giving evidence throughout her trial, Noor claimed she was threatened with being 'cursed' and 'disowned' from her community if she did not take part. To date, the only other successful prosecution of under the FGM Act of 2003, was in 2019 when a Ugandan woman from Walthamstow, east London, was jailed for 11 years for cutting a three-year-old girl.
Senior crown prosecutor Patricia Strobino (pictured) hailed Noor's conviction saying: 'This kind of case will hopefully encourage potential victims and survivors of FGM to come forward, safe in the knowledge that they are supported' Advertisement The court heard: 'On 11 January 2019 was medically examined by doctors at University College Hospital here in London. It was found that her clitoris had been completely removed.'
'You will hear expert evidence that 'Sunnah Gudniin' is a particular term which means removal of the clitoris,' Ms Heer said. Noor said that while the child had cried while it was being carried out she was 'happy and able to run around and play afterwards'. It's also known as female circumcision or cutting, and by other terms, such as Sunna, gudniin, halalays, tahur, megrez and khitan, among others.
'It will also send a clear message to those prospective defendants or people that want to maintain this practice that it doesn't matter whether they assist or practise or maintain this practice within the UK, or overseas, they are likely to be prosecuted.'
