The Home Secretary's attacks on the European Convention on Human Rights and multi-culturalism will land well among rightwingers

Sunak will need to watch his back over both shoulders – to one side there will be those trying to push him further to the right, to the other there will be those fighting back from the centre right. Which way Michael Gove goes on the Sunday morning talk shows, “helpful” or “unhelpful”, will be a barometer of how uncomfortable Manchester 2023 will be for the leader.

As one long-serving Tory loyalist put it to me, the conference is now “for the old and bold and their corporate sponsors and not for the party faithful. Those of them who do make it will be bewildered they are being asked to applaud yet another leader.” Truss is preening herself as a once and future leader and has been holding salons for young activists. Tory activists are naturally reluctant to admit they made a mistake choosing her and her siren song that tax cuts always spur growth has eternal appeal.

Suella Braverman is the hot tip to be the conference darling for the second year running. Her “dream” of full flights to Rwanda clinched it last year, this year her attacks on theand multi-culturalism should be worth a standing ovation – in their heart of hearts, that is what the rightwingers who still bother to come to conference and who pack her fringes want to hear.
