The SeaKit's achievement was impressive but is there really a market for unmanned shipping? The molluscs had been caught in Essex and transported to Belgium on a 12m aluminium-hulled vessel, which traversed the English Channel with no humans on board. The crewless boat was carefully watched by four people in a control centre in Tollersbury, Essex, headquarters of Hushcraft, the company behind the design and development of the craft.
Now Hushcraft wants SeaKIT to be used for transporting cargo, hence mounting the 5kg box of oysters - a local delicacy - on to the vessel and sending it to Ostend. But is there a market for it?Onboard cameras and microphones feed information to the control centre Ships with no sailors mean no risk to human life from fires or other hazards at sea. No-one needs to recruit staff, pay them, keep them trained or guard against unlicensed crew. The boats can go anywhere. But, in Prof Brennan's view, the first Achilles heel of unmanned shipping might be the very technology that created it.
No matter what technology is introduced there will always have to be some intervention, a small craft could theoretically travel from A-B with out intervention but larger ships carrying passengers , dangerous cargo will always require a human eliment for safety.
How about about ships travelling at say 15kts not 20+. What would that save? Yes, we would have to wait longer for our TVs and washing machines....
All we have to do is stop people having children and the human race can become extinct,as clearly we don’t need people anymore.
What about the chef?
And the navy
No! Because mechanical and electronics go wrong! Human has to be in control. Maybe less of them?
Can't see what purpose it's going to serve What happens in bad weather or if technology fails and of course the security issues.
No
The Irish Navy are spearheading this. They currently have 8 Naval Vessels with no crew.
No, at least not for large ships. They're already heavily automated but still require on-site humans for maintenance, emergencies, and certain specialized/near-coast navigation (e.g. navigating the Mississippi river). And the sailors are a minuscule part of the operating costs.
What is the point? As daft as autonomous cars!
If they keep shutting down jobs where will people get=wages at.
Pirates be like
Next up, Surrogates in real life, may already exist. Never know, some people just aren't human and it shows.
And Somali pirate boats without pirates.
Auto-pirate.
THERE HAS TO BE AT LEAST ONE SAILOR. IF HE CAN HANDLE IT
Could be, we are already familiar with the concept of governments without leaders!
metoo hits the world of commercial shipping ....
