I was 37 when I was finally diagnosed with ADHD. What took so long?

. All the close friendships that imploded, the CV that would never fit a single page, the red flags I consistently missed, in social situations and with men. I was constantly self-conscious about something nobody else could see. And at 37 I had stopped coping with much outside of our family home – I’d waved goodbye to my career, friends and even my wanderlust, to just try and get a handle on the everyday demands of earning money and caring for my child.

The truth is, girls and women with ADHD people present differently. We mask a lot of the common traits, too, and tend towards the inattentive type rather than hyperactive – it can look more like daydreaming, forgetfulness, indecisiveness, and an inability to regulate emotions.

Sadly, very few schools are sufficiently equipped with this information to spot ADHD in girls, and as with the majority of mental health services in the UK, the NHS assessment system is drastically under-funded and under-staffed. Waiting times for an ADHD assessment can be up to 5 years in some areas. There is a nation-wide shortage of ADHD specialists with the experience required to appropriately diagnose ADHD.
