As actress Kate Winslet says more can be done to protect children, is the Online Safety Bill enough, asks Laura Kuenssberg?

By Laura Kuenssberg"My God, I don't know what I'm supposed to do at all." That's not an admission that you expect to hear from a movie megastar.

The drama - I am Ruth - is hard to watch, but hard to look away from. Without giving a terrible spoiler, it does also in the end offer hope. She suggests some online platforms should be banned for kids and accuses the government and tech firms of "shirking responsibility"."Whoever those people are, they know who they are, they should just step up and do better," she told me.The UK was going to be the first country in the world to try and solve this problem but there have been so many delays the EU got there first.

That climate soured some time ago. As one senior tech executive described it: "After tech euphoria now the pendulum has swung completely the other way."

The poor wankers

Not the government. Give them an inch and they'll take away EVERYTHING.

Parents need to be more proactive instead of thinking, 'Oh, it's OK, 'they' will protect my kids'. If you ask the parents who 'they' is referring to, they won't have an answer.

Rather than campaigning for a gross invasion of privacy for all adults (having to submit id documents to every website we visit), why don’t you just supervise your kids as they use the web? Parental controls. App limits. Or simply don’t buy them a smartphone!

parents.

Literally EVERYONE needs to step up and protect kids.

Parents 'powerless' over children's social media, Winslet warnsKate Winslet has urged social media firms to enforce age restrictions as she said parents feel 'utterly powerless' to protect their children online. If Winslet isn't able to stop her own kid using social media, what is she expecting others to do about it? Social media should be 18+ with I'd confirmation like any other 18+ website SHOULD be. Unless you're going to ask users to validate with own credit card?
