As Labour reveals plans to abolish the second chamber, we take a look at its place in the British parliament.

However, there are still 91 hereditary peers - people who have their seat in the chamber because of a title passed down from their families, like a duke or viscount - as well as 25 bishops, who are among the most senior members of the Church of England.

Instead, a compromise was made, meaning 92 hereditary peers could remain, but they would be elected from all those eligible for a seat under the old rules. And despite changes to allow women to take the seat, albeit only if they did not have any brothers for a title to be passed to, all 92 are still men.The most recent census data in England and Wales

Add to that the range of faiths now represented across the whole of the UK, some have argued it seems outdated to have a significant number of peers from one religion sat in the chamber.Although any nomination has to be approved by the Crown, they are first made by the prime minister of the day - with opposition leaders expected to be allowed to suggest a handful as well.

Sorry, but unless UKLabour & Keir_Starmer face facts, seriously address the elephant in the room, stop placating & sitting on the fence, disregarding the huge damage it is doing to Britain, all these 'brilliant' ideas are just a waste of time. Brexit BrexitDisaster

Will be very much appreciated and the beginning of democracy into the anachronistic system whereby unelected are made the heads of state Why? Good. But I do think it’s important that the Government is able to replace the HoL with something which employs very knowledgeable people within certain sectors which can help Parliament make decisions.

Labour to scrap 'indefensible' House of Lords in first term under new plans to shake up constitutionSir Keir Starmer would abolish the House of Lords in Labour's first term should he win the next general election. I bet they do, but it will called something else. Won’t happen. Was thinking this needed more than the first 2 words, but that’s covered it. Hilarious the only people I’m hearing on the radio opposing the policy all have “ Lord “ before their name.

Labour will create new democratic second chamber as current House of Lords set-up 'indefensible', says Gordon BrownThe former prime minister has also insisted there will be a ban on second jobs for MPs if Labour wins the next election - though he indicated there could be an exemption to that for those MPs who need to work to maintain professional qualifications such as doctors and lawyers. I've been to the House of Lords, beautiful and spectacular chamber, however it's not fit for purpose, people should not be born into peerage and have the claim by way of name or titles to sit at the heart of the political establishment - abolish the upper chamber/House of Lords LOL! So, they still plan to install a Labour government no matter what the result at the next election? Time for a revolution.
