What is it like to live in a converted shipping container?

While the report says the fact these homes are self-contained is"an advantage", it warned they can also become"overcrowded".

In the living area - which includes a small kitchen - there is no furniture except for a small table and a chair. The majority of the room is space for her children to play. "I keep saying we need an extra room for him and space for sensory toys, which need to be fitted on the wall and ground so he cannot lift them, so he can play and be calm."

The council says most of its container homes do have ovens and that it does offer extra fans to residents in the summer months, and extra heaters in the winter.Ms Abu Baker says she struggles to prepare warm meals for her four children in the container's kitchenThe gated community is well-landscaped, with planters dotted around the tidy grounds and play area.

Fatima, a former cardiac nurse, says living there was better than being homeless, but moved out in July, after finding a two bedroom house in Northolt.Workmen were fitting anti-pigeon spikes to the containers' ledges after complaints over droppings

Gimme better free stuff!!!!!! 🙄

Mate, I'd jump at the chance to live in one

Better than being homeless would be my guess.

Interesting report which I dint think many replyer a have read. In the NL these are often used and have now become quite a thing for student accommodation. Yes summer it's an oven and winter an ice box but it's a stepping stone and working together people can make it work.

Its a home, bloody deal with it,count yourself luck as many are not so lucky!

What have our governments done to us.

I'm homeless and I'd fucking love to have one of those, how about giving them to homeless people too! bbc news is a joke!

Great!!

Better than nothing

Seems fine to me.

Awful lot of Racism in this thread. So racists are just out in the open now yeah?

These look positively luxurious compared to the accommodation our Armed Forces are put in. What's the problem?

What’s it like to be an ungrateful ponce?

Looks awright to me to be fair

Bloody BBC! I am outraged! They come, uninvited, are given hospitality (housing, welfare, healthcare), play the system for all it is worth, probably have more children for sympathy and extra welfare and actually hate us!!!!

Ask people living on the streets. bet they wouldn't turn their noses up if you offered them one.

How many of you BBC lefty luvvies have taken in the homeless or housed an asylum seekers family? Go on, I will wait....

It all depends how you dress it up 👍

Cheap, quick to assemble, space efficient, easy to move, recycling, effective.

Youtube has plenty of videos of people who live in shipping container homes. Some people even buy a shipping container and build it out themselves. It's popular with the sustainable/environmental crowd.

Dry, warm & probably a lot better than a park bench or shop doorway I’d have thought. Having worked with homeless people, the first stage is get them off the streets into temporary accommodation, then into something better & more permanent.

Feel free to return to your homeland, then perhaps we could look after our own people.

If they’d ot like it do like the rest of us SORT YOURSELF OUT

Stop moaning and improvise and be thankful your not sleeping rough

This is lies from the BBC. All around Europe and the world they have been converting old shipping containers into houses for years. For students, veterans, homeless, u can even rent them on some beaches in America. It is a huge, huge success. The BBC know it. This is Pathetic.

It’s costing me £2,700 for three days in one at DownloadFest next year.

Could be worse they could live on the streets with missiles flying over their heads. Sendthemback

As a safe base to give you an opportunity to better yourself and improve your life they are fine.

I have spent weeks at a time in converted shipping containers (without windows) in the Gulf of Mexico on oil platforms. Oh, if you work deep water Gulf of Mexico, you will work with Scottish people. Wood Group and Expro Group are Scottish. anthonylenaghan

Probably pretty good. I'd put one on Airbnb. It's an experience

Obviously better than living in the shithole they escaped from.

I don't want my tax money spent on these economic migrants.

I can see it's not perfect (no such thing) but this has to be a somewhat better arrangement than being on the streets?

I’d have happily lived there before I got on my feet. Have some good dam gratitude you parasites.

What's it like to live in a doorway ?

PatrickOrrPGA

Better than the standard accommodation at Camber sands pontins

There was an edition of Grand Designs in which a house was made from them

Probably better than in tents on the steers I'm sure the homeless would swap

I’m not that bothered really!

Bet their first words were......Social Security !

Better than living on the streets like some ex-servicemen are having to do.

I think they have been very lucky myself.

Watch program ‘Tiny House’ extremely popular nowawadays. But migrants need 4 stars mansions of course.

Shipping containers are used to build many domestic buildings.

Came through 5 different countries to get here, they could always go back to any one of those and try to get better FREE stuff or go back to country of origin and get executed by asking for FREE stuff.

A microwave and working hobs yet cant do an evening meal and have to rely on sandwiches? Theres a million meals you can make with just jobs. Relying on sandwiches is just laziness. If they want something better they should go out and earn it.

looks pretty decent to be fair

why does the BBC hate Britain?

Why aren't these given to our genuine HOMELESS instead of the bloidy illegals

Bbc and sky news are shite they support every country apart from the UK 🇬🇧

Another 31 today where do you want to put them.

I’d imagine if you’d come from a war torn impoverished country. Somewhere where there is a poor quality of life and not many are fortunate to have so much as a roof over their head; probably not even access to a Nando’s. I’d imagine anyone from such conditions wouldn’t mind

I’ll hazard a guess.......A damn sight nicer than living on the streets

I've had worse digs than that.

Shopping container in Ealing? I reckon its paradise compared to their home nation, Somalia

Stupid question

If they don’t like it send them all home simples....our own homeless would appreciate a roof over their heads

luxury if you are used to shack elsewhere always welcome to go back Lulu

Better than a park bench .

Better than they had. So get fucked. Dont like it.....

Please give it a rest. We’re all sick to death of seeing this ungrateful, entitled woman

The Brussels Bullshit Club don’t have a clue about the mood of our nation. They don’t seem to possess a single brain cell between them. They’re only concerned about Building Britain’s Caliphate.

Que the BBC bias... no housing stock left.. send em home ffs

Hey Aisha/Fahita/Moheesha do not bite the hand that feeds you, the question we should be asking is not what can we do for you but what do you bring to us ?

Better than sleeping in a doorway.

Abdel doesn’t work but if he did he would be an ungrateful Bar Steward.

What it's like to go from a mud hut to a palace.

BETTER THAN A BLOODY SHOP DOOR WAY YOU VIRTUE SIGNALLING CREEPS

These were a much better solution, people were still calling them home till about 10 years ago:

Real story here is the London borough of Ealing has 9000 people waiting for a council house. 32 boroughs excl. the city of London. So possibly a third of a million people waiting list in London, yet still they come by the thousands. That’s a city the size of Coventry.

Then why are so many Africans and Asians trying to get here.

I'd love one of these in the garden. I could move the kids and wife in there and finally have some peace and quiet.

Well that backfired. Now do one on the accomodation our armed forces have to live in whilst on tour in the desert

Much better than an unconverted one thanks

Very lucky to have anywhere for free

Ask the many ex service & British people on the streets if they would like one sure they wouldn't be so ungrateful 😠😠😠😠

England is becoming a third world country under the Tories.

Ive stayed in worse. Never felt the urge to go public about it either. Your just grateful for a stop gap until you can get on your feet if you got anything about you.

Agenda 21/2130

Planning to build my house out of them..

look better than the bedsit the council put me in back in the 80's...

Immigrants get preferential treatment on housing they skip the waiting lists. We don't have enough housing for our own people why are we letting more in.

If it's not good enough, they know where the door is.

What's it like to live in a temporary home as opposed to living on the streets is the correct question to ask.

Brilliant when it’s free Even more brilliant if you are homeless And even more so if you fought for our country and are also homeless

I actually cannot believe that this entitled oxygen thief is getting any attention, let alone getting support.

If you were that desperate to live somewhere you would accept this..too many migrants are coming over with their big families and expecting luxury housing

To be fair to EalingCouncil they have tried to make it nice, even planting It really isn’t as bad as she makes out. There’s room for drawers/storage but she’s chosen to stack bags of clothes up. She should be more grateful she’s not in a one room B&B. How did she become homeless?

If I were a genuine refugee I would be very grateful to live in one. If I were an economic migrant I would be very unhappy as I would expect to be given more.

Has the bbc bbc watched Grand Designs? Or are you jumping on the left wing band wagon

People pay hundreds of pounds / night to stay in shipping containers what’s the problem here ?

Who would you dispossess to give them something better? Any volunteers in the BBC, or are you all full up already?

Typical BBC negativity. Millions of people live in them. Water tight, warm and safe what's the issue. Oh, not forgetting........FREE.

Well it's too good for spongers like them

Better than sleeping in shop doorways that plenty UK born citizens have to do

Marie 'I was so happy that I had my own front door that I could lock +my own bathroom + kitchen. It gave me piece of mind that I was keeping my daughter safe. It was also a relief to be able to stay within Ealing, + be close to my friends, family and work”

Better than sleeping in a box 📦 on the streets

Who cares?

I can imagine that toff from Grand Designs wanking over one of these if someone proposed it as an idea for the show.

illegal immigrants who complain when they have better housing than British homeless can just fck right back to where they came from.

A hundred times better than living on the streets I'd imagine.

Better than living in a war zone.

Better than living in France apparently. Or did they pass through France ' come here because there thought we works just give them a house when the French won't?

Likely no different than a concrete apartment building but we don’t seem to be clutching our pearls over those edifices to despair.

Probably that same as living in a caravan... that’s a thing people work 50 weeks a year for and pay £850 a week to stay in a field in the county side.

If was homeless then of course.....and I'd be grateful and not complain about it.

No idea about living in one, but cocker travels in one, a lot! RugbyPodcast.

Seems a nice place,at the moment.thay building a container mosque.thay have rights u no..🤔

Have a word with thousands of our homeless veterans, see what they think about priority being given to ungrateful sponging foreigners.

It's free living! We owe these people fuck all! Go home then! We should be giving homeless people affordable housing rather than hand outs and social care to Johnny foreigner

A lot better than living on the streets that some of our own people do!!!!

That's a lot nicer than my first flat. Why are you pushing an agenda when actual citizens don't live that well?

Better than the shit hole she came feom in the back of a lorry....why not do a proper story....one that people care about... over 7500 veterans on the streets ...on average 3 a week kill themselves....and you do a story on an ungrateful rat ...no wonder you are losing viewers

I'd suspect there are homeless who'd give you a good answer to that question.

Ask the vet sleeping on the street

A lot better than the unhealthy concrete and asbestos prefab I was born in.

Shit

I see it has windows. The way some moan about it, you’d think they’d be living in a cardboard box🤦‍♂️ So, probably very spacious and warm 🤷‍♂️

miles better than a lot of flats by the looks of it 😂

Then go back where you came from

Better than a tarpaulin and a few cardboard boxes. Bloody sand gets everywhere.

Better than living in a war torn country I’m guessing.

Better than living on the street

A lot better than sleeping in zero temps on the street like thousands of Brits are forced to do, so the migrants can get first offer, disgusting Country this is.

Get one, move in and find out.

Surely one of those highly paid BBC presenters could accommodate this family

Worse than living in a house in Somalia, apparently. Makes you wonder why people bother.

The never ending leftist lies told to them of British streets paved with gold, free fully furnished mansions and free unlimited benefits money

This thread is not going as planned for the Biased Bullsh!t Corporation

Why did they not register in France, given they'd come there 1st? If UK is worse than the Calais jungle & Eritrea, perhaps she could consider another move?

Are they from UN’s Open Borders (Soros)Migrant Agreement? Signed May/sajidjavid’s Nov2018. If so, many would be from refugee camps where homes were 1 tent with no facilities or running water. Meanwhile, UK has a homeless problem: Vets, Addicts, Alcoholics, poor, Mentak Health

looks better than sleeping in a field.or in the streets.

Yea we have veterans on the streets . They would gladly have one .

I would be happy in just one of these!

It's a scandal...they should be put up at the finest 5 star hotels with a top of the range 4 x 4 thrown in. Pretty obvs really.

A good market for British steel.

'Liberal' BBC stirring up again. Never seems as worried about homeless veteran soldiers

Are army does it all the time for months on end

Do you remember when people found a place to live made a home then had children ?

Must be better than living on the street, no?

I'm sure some of the overpaid BBC executives have space in their multi bedrooms homes, maybe they could spare this woman and 4 kids a room or two

BBC really you have not got a clue. As point in Denmark they are standard. They are nice to live in. They are a practical option and also are recycled containers.

If it’s a choice between kipping in a chippy doorway or a converted container with all mod cons I’ll have the container please

Quite good. Not joking, pls travel to Mumbai, this is pretty good it wont qualify to be slum here... Really.

An insult to the vast majority of British people; our forebears made do with a damn sight worse than that with little or nothing in the way of hand-outs. UK Parliament USA poverty wealth housing MSM media SkyNews

Better than the shop doorways our ex servicemen freeze to death in,

It's a kind of pre-fab just different design. We didn't have shipping containers in those days

What's wrong with living in one of these? If people are being housed in these for free and are complaining they can piss off and live on the streets then.

Better than living outside

Better than living in a cave in an ISIS training camp....

In Amsterdam North of the River opposite the Central station a community of students artists reside in shipping containers.

I’m gong to hazard a guess and say it’s a lot better than where they’ve come from, or they’d go back.... so stop fucking moaning or piss off back.

Maybe she shouldn’t have come Maybe she shouldn’t have 4. kids Maybe she should’ve been grateful

We lived in prefabs in Plymouth built by the German POW's.They were s'posed to be temp housing (Plymouth had been flattened by the Luftwaffe) max 5 yrs. We were in them for 15 yrs! Not that bad we had massive gardens as they were built on open fields. We survived and were happy!!

Alot better then living on the streets

Better than sleeping under a railway arch. Better than many council flats. What's the problem?

Rather better than living on the streets or in a tent in some hellhole in the Middle East. That woman is about the most ungrateful b**** I have ever come across.

Probably better than in a 'Stan, but we'll whinge about it anyway.

would the housing minister and family RobertJenrick live for a week in a converted shippingcontainer? the tories are all talk and no action on homelessness, home standards! brexit

It's better than living on the the streets, and youd think it must be better than the countries that people are seeking asylum from. Unless they are liars and are only here for the handouts and 5 bedroom house they thought they were getting.

Looks decent to me

Privileged! Thankful! Blessed!

3 million population growth in the last 10 years, also like the existing folk , have housing needs.

Better than the streets I'd say, be grateful, work hard and save. I started in one tiny room of a nurses quarters I worked hard, had 2 jobs & now own my own home. Simple strategy really!

they look perfectly OK to me, go round som eof thew sink estates and you will find a lot worse accommodation that people are living in than those people

Cheap

Better than they had in Syria no doubt 🤔 So many safe countries of their own culture nearer than 🇬🇧..... Why here 😏

Probably better than living in a land ravished by war!

Things are seldom so bad they could not get worse. British tax payers do not owe the world a living and accommodation. This is why populism is growing, and it can’t happen quick or widely enough!!

Some people have beer money, but expect a champagne lifestyle

Happy enough to sneak over in one, then kick off when they don’t get a free house for a large family.

I spent the first four years of my life living in a slum in North London. My parents would have given anything to live in a shipping container, especially the high rise ones.

Just here for the ratio.

Better than on the street as many indigenous Brits. Utterly shameful to prioritise foreigners above own population

I lived in one in Afghan, they’re spot on and have everything you need.

it must be better than poorly maintained Victorian slum...

She should be grateful she could be on the streets like some of the ex service personnel

Not going how you'd planned it this thread is it ?

My flat isn't much better with damp and cold. Pensioner with illness

Better than a building in Syria get over it or go back and rebuild the country

I lived on one without windows for four months in the Falklands. Then similar in Kosovo and Iraq.... Obviously good enough for the British Forces....

People living in tiny spaces - Hong Kong: World's Busiest Cities | BBC Two Published on Sep 20, 2017

Lot better than on the streets you twits

Much better than on a cold park beach

- Hong Kong is in the news, there housing is not. - well illustrated Inside Hong Kong’s cage homes Published on Aug 15, 2018

Better than a hut in the desert I guess

It's better then sleeping in a shop doorway.

Better than that of woman friend who had to share a one bed room with 16 yr old son in a rat infested B&B because her local London council said they weren't priority. They didn't make themselves homesless as her husband stopped mortgage payments & abandoned them.

If u didn't see outside or tell anyone they containers then u would think that was pretty decent for a 3 bed wouldn't u? Buy some draws & wardrobe & the issue of 'leaving in plastic bags' is no longer an issue. Am I missing something or is the container name tainting the reality?

Typical BBC reporting.

Hardly different to the post war prefabs my father (who fought in WWll for 5 long years), mother and I lived in. We thought it a palace, compared to the one room flat we’d lived in before.

Better than living on the streets. Just like mobile homes without the view!

There are some people who cannot even get on a council waiting list. I am guessing they would be highly delighted with shelter like this.

Better than being in a worn torn country, better than being homeless better than being in a violent relationship, shall i continue ?

100% better than living on the streets. Which I had to do in a tent when I left the forces. Close to 3 years going the the hostel system, bunking up with dirty smackheads... until I was offered a place with my local council. Ungreatful B*stards

clearly not good enough for someone who wants it for nothing

Probably much the same as living in a bedsit or 1 bedroom flat you don't every body complaining be grateful you've got a home some havnt !!

Bloody dam sight better than the streets!

Life is what you make it though. If you have family then you are very rich indeed. Not everyone is a material person & you never know what's around the corner.

Be fine as long as you are not still on the ship on the way to Japan.

Better than living in a bomb crater I suppose !!

Better than living on the streets I suppose?

No politician would choose to live in a shipping container and none would allow their children to, so why should poor homes be acceptable for any of us? They'll legislate to allow us to be exploited by developers into shoe boxes they will never be subjected to themselves.

'It’s better to have a home, even if it’s little— everyone should call somewhere “home.” Even if you own just two goats beneath a faulty roof, that’s still better than begging.'

Home is what you make it

Seems from the responses BBC just fell flat on its face again. My friend lives in one in Ealing its great

Many builds have been made from shipping containers. One example the travel lodge in Stratford was created using shipping containers

Sounds like a great idea. Must be thousands out there.

21st century prefab.

Better than on the street like many ex service men and women!

Better than living rough I bet.

There are quite a number of valid, successful businesses which choose to operate out of shipping containers for their offices. Likewise several retail outlets.... Boxpark in Shoreditch for eg. What do ppl expect, a mansion! Hardworking ppl doing several jobs struggle let alone...

Ask BBCLondonNews they were promoting the idea not so long ago.

Ask the housing & communities minister, EstherMcVey1, I'm sure she has a clear idea of what life is like for those living under these circumstances!... Er. Not

Further to my previous, who is paying for ; electricity, gas, water, sewerage, food, rubbish collection, possible TV with no Licence, so tell those moaning to shut up 🤐 or ship 🚢 out

The future is now for the overcrowded 🇬🇧 brexit

Better than a tent ⛺️

it must be better then living on the streets i have seen the homelessness in my area rise out of control we have people sitting all over are shopping area begging. the park has become a local daily meet up spot for drinking

A lot better than being on the streets

Better than Islamabad, Afghanistan, Somalia,........ So take it or f*** off back to Islamabad, Afghanistan, Somalia.........

BBC stirring up hatred to racial minorities again? Not like them is it? And to think we have to pay £145 a year for the biased nonsense the BBC churns out

they would have passed all current safety and fire regulations

I’m sick to death of britainbashing. Don’t come here then!!!

Absolutely zero sympathy here!!

Safe! Warm! Free of persecutionand war! Free!!!! Housed IN WEST LONDON!! Free! Did I mention FREE!! Well it’s Free! Ffs

Safe fire escape. Looks better than some old council flats.. look ok. Im not sure why it’s news really. The only thing o can see is the BBC stoking racism to be honest... stoking people to wind them up and generate negative responses, which is happening all over Twitter.

Don’t these peeps make there beds!

Looks nice, PVC windows and doors. Mine are wood !

Beggars cant be choosers.

I would imagine considerably better than being homeless. If people don’t like living in them, kick them out and let someone who’ll be grateful for a roof over their head live there instead.

Better than a tent in a refugee camp 🤔

Dutch students are doing that for years now.

Not too dissimilar to the post war prefabs and far better than the stark alternative

Better than being homeless...or where they came from I would bet.

Possibly better than living on the streets or in a warzone. Wasn't too long ago that converted shipping containers were being hailed as a possible solution to housing shortage.

Not fit for disabled people , but if they are not damp and leaking ,it’s what,s availalabe so they are not ideal , but better than homeless.People can not expect a semidetached house with bedroom for every child with out putting in some money themselves!

A bit like post war 'prefabs'.

A lot better than being homeless.

I am not in any way defending Councils providing temporary housing in converted Containers. However, when we stayed in Amsterdam in 2017, we were in a student village of stacked, converted containers. It was clean, watertight, warm and efficient.. Yes, not a house. But...

Fuck all wrong with it. Its the sense of entitlement some people have that's the problem.

On another report it would be an 'amazing space'. I spent 3 years on a remote project living in 1/3rd of a 40' container. I have no sympathy.

Not that different to the prefabs that were used. A home is what you bring to it. Better any roof over your heads than none. Many new hotels are constructed from meshed together containers, it is a very efficient method of construction.

As opposed to living on the streets? Excellent

Maybe they could spend a week living in a shop doorway, then re-evaluate if this really is that bad? It’s called emergency housing for a reason Think it would be cheaper though for the councils to buy static caravans though

Improvement from the street. But, when someone decides they want them converted cheaper or eek out a few pounds more in rent etc the problems will start again.

Shite I would imagine

So long as you don't pack more than 2 people in there they seem very nicely insulated with all services required.

This container life looks like Tokyo life. Only difference is there is aircon at Tokyo.

Simple answer! Better than living in a doorway 👍🏻

I'm sure our own indigenous homeless would be grateful for anything

Probably much better than the streets. Many would cut a finger off just for the chance. Grow up BBC.

Sick listening to this now.

Weren't these being touted as high brow trendy residences a decade ago?

My mother's family had to live in a converted bus 80 years ago.

Better than a desert tent obviously.
