If your neighbor is your best customer and he gets in difficulty it makes sense to give him a loan to tide him over. Ireland repaid the money loaned and is working on getting back to business and would still be happy to deal with the UK if they were not intent on self harm.

We also stood idly by as the famine killed a million people. Why aren’t you mentioning that too..?

Didn't we bail them out because had we not done so we'd have lost a very valuable trading partner to the UK? Costing the UK a fortune and this way we charged them interest on the bail out and actually made a profit.
