'This pedestrian was extremely fortunate to avoid serious injury - or worse'

Police say thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused after a collision in North Belfast on Thursday.

At around 1.30am yesterday morning, officers from Tennent St responded to a report of a road traffic collision on the Antrim Road. A white van had collided with a traffic island and the driver allegedly "made off from the scene". In a social media appeal, police said on review of CCTV, a pedestrian was "extremely fortunate to avoid serious injury" after the vehicle "narrowly missed" them. They are asking for witnesses to come forward, or for those with dash cam footage to bring it to officers.A PSNI spokesperson said: "We have viewed CCTV of the incident which shows the van out of control and narrowly missing a pedestrian who was walking along the road.

"The driver of the van made off from the scene. An investigation has been launched and we are pleased to say that we have made an arrest for a number of offences. "We are appealing for witness - do you have CCTV or Dashcam footage of this white van or the collision? Were you on the road at the time? If you can provide any information to us - call 101 and speak to the team. Incident number 85 - 30/06/22." For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here.
