EXCLUSIVE: Government sources confirmed to the Sunday Mirror that talks between senior officials at the Department of Health, the Department of Culture Media and Sport and Premier League are ongoing

Supporters face being locked out of stadiums in England unless they are double-jabbed.Plans to show passports at turnstiles are being finalised by the Tories after talks with footie chiefs, the Sunday Mirror can reveal. The move would apply to ALL 92 professional clubs in England – raising fears of financial meltdown for lower-league teams who need matchday cash to survive.

Last night Labour ’s shadow secretary of state for sport Jo Stevens cried foul. She said: “To insist on vaccine passports less than a month before the start of the season will cause major disruption, especially at the lower end of the pyramid.“The Government has chopped and changed their advice, making it impossible for people and businesses to plan.”

Mirror analysis reveals the potential impact on fans. Around 800,000 will attend Premier League games each week as full crowd return.Taking out children, that leaves 704,000 – and 30% of those are not double-jabbed. It means 210,000 would be locked out – plus many more in the second tier Championship, League One and Two.

Our revelation comes after vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said a widening of the passport scheme was the “right thing to do”. He said venues – including sports stadiums – could insist on proof of double vaccination. Now the Mirror can confirm an announcement is set to be made before the season begins.

Governmet sources yesterday confirmed talks between senior officials at the Department of Health, the Department of Culture Media and Sport and Premier League. But MP Ms Stevens said: “Labour has been clear the use of vaccination status alone will exclude those who can’t be vaccinated or haven’t had the jab because of delays.

“Double-jabbed doesn’t prove you aren’t carrying the virus. Testing for access to venues would be more efficient.”Human rights group Liberty also criticised the plans. Director Grey Collier said: “We all want to know we are doing the right thing to stay safe and protect each other, but this is yet another unnecessary and divisive intervention that will end up damaging communities, not helping them.

“Vaccine passports will ultimately create a two-tier society in which some can access freedoms and support while others are shut out. This authoritarian approach has been the hallmark of this government’s pandemic response.”Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has spoken out against the plan. He said online: ”You shouldn’t need a passport to watch a football match. Test events have been carried out with great success.”

But ex-Liverpool player Mark Lawrenson backed the move. He told us: “I think it’s a great idea. Why wouldn’t you want to be safe and why wouldn’t you make it so you had passports?“If I’m getting on a plane I would want anyone I’m sitting next to to be vaccinated. Why wouldn’t you if you want to live longer? If it means we can get people into stadiums then just do it. And without crowds at lower league clubs, what are they going to do? It’s all about finances.”

Empty stadiums last season cost the 20 Premier League clubs about £1.1billion. And many EFL clubs fear they would go to the wall if fans were not allowed to attend this season.Board members of the Football Supporters’ Association will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss the move.

Malcolm Clarke, chair of the FSA, said: “In a recent FSA poll three-quarters of fans told us they would be there from the first game of the season.“Clubs and authorities need to be mindful, however, that they communicate with supporters the measures they are taking to keep fans safe, which will help reassure and encourage those who may be reluctant to return.”

England manager Gareth Southgate said last week that getting vaccinated is a chance to “get your freedom back”.In a message released by No10, he said: “There’s no doubt the vaccination programme is our best route out of this problem, not only as a country but across the world. I just wanted to say how important it is, if you haven’t had your vaccine yet, to go and get it done.”

His comment came after it was revealed the proportion of people aged 20-29 testing positive in England had hit record levels.Experts say cases in the UK rocketed in the age group as the Euro 2020 football tournament progressed. And the World Health Organisation said it caused a 10% spike across the continent.

In April, chiefs representing football, rugby, cricket, tennis and F1 backed vaccine passports and Covid testing as a “credible” means of allowing full capacities. But they also warned “the final approach must not be discriminatory, should protect privacy and have clear exit criteria”.

Boris says Do not slag off the government 👍 Welcome to Nazi Britain. People are falling right into the governments and media hands by turning against the people who choose not to be vaccinated. For god sake stop it people. Stop this madness Do they literally want to take everything from the working class. We’ve lost pubs, music venues and now football is under threat. Meanwhile ballet, opera, tennis, polo, golf, croquet and hunting can all do what they want. jogon

'Bl**dy let myself down' Alex Scott apologises after viewer calls out her Olympics errorALEX SCOTT has taken to social media to apologise after branding the Team GB football squad 'Team England', after a fan called her out for the 'habit'. What was the error? Surely Alex Scott can just correct herself instead of saying she let herself down?
