Speaking from his home near Tel Aviv, Dr Liel said: “The Americans are setting the agenda. The political and diplomatic agenda for after the war, and maybe even during the war. Dr Liel, who served in his nation’s diplomatic service for 30 years, is the most senior political figure to have publicly stated doubts about Mr Netanyahu’s future.
As for when Mr Netanyahu could be removed from office, Dr Liel said: “As I see it, his political career is finished, but we will probably have to wait for the end of the war to consider who takes over.”Looking towards peace and an end to the conflict, Dr Liel claimed there is one man who could revitalise hopes for a two-state solution: Marwan Barghouti.
“Mandela was the only leader that could unite the whole South African nation in 1994, and it might so happen that Barghouti will be able to do so to the Palestinians, 40 years later, in 2024.” Marwan Barghouti is a West Bank Fatah party leader widely considered as the “Palestinian’s Mandela”, by his supporters.
