An American tourist has spent a night in a police cell after crashing at a Derry roundabout, a court heard on Monday.
Safiya Lahhan was on her first vist to the city when she had to spend the night in a police cell at Strand Road PSNI station after she was arrested following a collision on the roundabout at Carlisle Road on the city side of Craigavon Bridge on Sunday afternoon. A prosecution solicitor told Dungannon Magistrate’s Court that Lahhan was not insured to drive the rental car and had mistakenly believed her Californian insurance policy covered her to drive here.
Defence barrister Stephen Mooney said Lahhan arrived in Ireland on September 11 to join her mother and godmother who had both arrived on September 5. After visiting Sligo they decided to drop into Derry on their way to Antrim.
why would her American insurance policy cover her over here 😕. Surely that would have been something the car rental company would have pointed out?
