Hundreds of thousands of people in Beirut have become homeless overnight after a huge explosion ripped through apartments and houses across the city.
The blast, which has claimed the lives of 100 people and injured 4,000, has turned countless buildings into heaps of rubble across the Lebanese capital. The explosion has now completely destroyed the homes of around 300,000 residents, the city’s governor announced. Marwan Aboud added that the cost of damages is estimated to be between $3 billion and $5 billion.
He said on Wednesday: ‘I think there are between 250,000 and 300,000 people who are now without homes.’Engineers and technical teams have yet to conduct an official assessment, he said, adding that damage from the blast in the port area seems to have extended over half of the city.
A friend was a cabin crew member of an airline, based in Beirut for months at at time, absolutely adored the city. She never felt unsafe in the streets, even at nightime. Her stories were hilarious and I still remember some of them. This was before the war tore the city apart.
