Unvaccinated man denied heart transplant by Boston hospital

A US hospital has rejected a patient for a heart transplant at least in part because he is not vaccinated against Covid-19.

Brigham and Women's Hospital told the BBC in a statement: "Given the shortage of available organs, we do everything we can to ensure that a patient who receives a transplanted organ has the greatest chance of survival." The hospital's carefully worded statement may suggest other factors lie beyond the patient's unvaccinated status for his ineligibility, but it refused to discuss specifics, citing patient privacy.

This is also not a new policy, there is a massive list of requirements that a potential organ receiver needs to meet from medical one to lifestyle changes, and list of vaccines is one of them. It really is that simple. If you don’t comply you don’t get an organ.

This isn't a punitive measure, but clinical. Undergoing major surgery in time of pandemic, would place an unvaccinated candidate at greater risk post-op. America's litigious system of private and semi-private healthcare means hospitals have to take account of these factors also.

After transplant he would be immunosuppressives with medication to reduce rejection of new heart. This would increase his risk of infection by any virus. Limited organ supply. Better to give to immunized candidate.
