Nearly 350,000 more people received their first dose of the Covid vaccine today, bringing the total number of people who have had their first jab to 4,609,740.

Nearly 350,000 more people have received their first dose of the Covid vaccine amid fears that supply chain delays will hamper efforts to protect the most vulnerable.

It comes after several days when the number of vaccines dipped well below the levels needed if the Government is to reach its target of vaccinating all of the most vulnerable people in the UK by mid-February. Meanwhile, AstraZeneca – the manufacturer of the other jab currently being used – won’t be able to scale up to two million doses per week until mid-February.

The county’s chief scientific advisor Sir Patrick Vallance has said the vaccines are ‘not doing enough heavy lifting’ at the moment to allow the Government to even think about lifting lockdown restrictions. ‘The numbers are nowhere near where they need to be at the moment, they need to come down quite a lot further – we need to make sure we stick with it.’He said it was hoped that as the vaccine took effect and cases dropped, it would be possible to start a gradual release of some of the measures.
