The UK’s first black archbishop who controversially did not get life peerage due to an admin error is expected to receive one ‘imminently’, after the Government was accused of institutional prejudice. John Sentamu, former Archbishop of York, was told he was put forward for a peerage when he retired on June 7 – butnever announced it. Both Mr Sentamu’s predecessors, Lord Hope and the former Archbishops of Canterbury, Rowan Williams and George Carey, were allowed to sit in the House of Lords in a personal capacity after they stepped down.
The Government was accused of ‘institutional prejudice’ after a No 10 spokesperson told the Sunday Times Mr Sentamu was kept off the list to keep numbers in the House of Lords down, despite the PM including his own brother, Jo Johnson.But a Whitehall source later said Mr Sentamu would be given his peerage ‘imminently’ and that ‘he was put forward for a peerage but the approval process is still ongoing’.
