Thousands of people missed off government's high risk list for Covid-19, despite meeting the criteria

The government has said about 1.5 million people have been identified as needing to"shield"

Miss Pearson, from Whitsbury in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, had her transplant 14 years ago and still visits hospital for regular check-ups. Despite registering her daughter on the government list herself, she said she had received no confirmation.Ms Pearson said a neighbour was currently helping to collect medication for Lucy but she was"worried about getting food".She said she had come across other transplant patients in the same position, and said:"People are beginning to feel despondent.""I'd be fairly unlikely to survive if I got coronavirus," said 79-year-old Liz Goldfinch.

"At the moment we're OK as we have neighbours who have been helping deliver food and anything else we might need. Mrs Goldfinch said she hoped she would not be forced into a position that meant she or her husband would have to leave the house."This has already happened on two occasions in he last three years. I suspect it would be a much more dire situation if I caught coronavirus.""Sometimes I can have three or four asthma attacks in one day if I catch a cold, and I find it really difficult to breathe," said Shivani Mistry, from Telford in Shropshire.

HayleyInspire Not thousands, it's tens and tens of thousands - at least.

And a real problem with disabled people who are house bound all the time not being included -lots of us rely on online deliveries all year round as we have no other options yet are not included in these lists.

Yes, we are really struggling because of this.

Yes it is appalling the number slipping through the net- wasteoftimehancock

And the UK Government cannot say they've not been made aware GOVUK bbclaurak Peston MattHancock GaryLineker DeborahMeaden Debbie_abrahams zoesqwilliams JonAshworth Keir_Starmer

Any chance you have got something positive to say today at the BBC? No, didn't think so.

The hospitals and GP surgeries were asked to compile a list of their patients. Its not the Government's list

It a great job if it only thousands as well over a million have been included. Also it easy to correct the error as many have. More puss poor reporting

BBCPolitics rcvd a text from my gp advising I’m on the risk list. Had the boris letter, he should’ve followed his own advice, it’s good but ltd to over 70’s so more contradictions. A quick call to 111, yup in the at risk & told the list is of risk conditions is generic & far from exhaustive.

Seems shambolic to me. Both GP and hospital team confirm “should be” on list but unclear if this has resulted in any action. Govt website to register doesn’t even confirm registration. Did this two weeks ago and still heard nothing from any supermarket despite being customer

Dear BBC, instead of Slating the government for misidentifying .00005% of the population, why don’t you acknowledge that is was actually an impressive feat in the timescale and actually HELP OUT with any minor errors. makingthisworse

Just had an email from Tesco that so far the Government have only released details of 110,000 people who have registered as extremelyvulnerable so even if you got a letter and registered don't hold out for a food delivery slot any time soon! Sharing data needs to be speed up.

I love this on their website if you register yourself. What if you don’t have anyone because they’re staying away to protect you and live over 60 miles away Starve or die because you don’t have your life saving medication

They missed the PM himself, hardly reassuring governance by the tories 😂

Is being a type two diabetic one of them anyone knows I’ve not had a letter but many friends have

What about children! My son has hyper mobility so a weakend immune system and asthma. Are children being missed!! Being a key worker expected to send my children to school, luckily avoided it for 2 weeks but not sure how much longer!

Yep me for one, rang my GP, he knew nothing about it

Thank you for this article. However great effort has been so far, there are shortcomings that are causing real hardship. Reporting on them and holding the government to account isn't left-wing bias whatever Twitter morons say.

The government's list is only as good as the data supplied by NHS, and as far as I'm concerned they're doing their very best

My partner has neuropathy, chronic pain, diabetes, very bad immune system, wheelchair bound ,takes 30 tablets a day cannot go out due to the high risk (doctors orders) yet not on the risk list This list does not cover enough of people’s illnesses

I’m a transplant patient, registering does not simply fix the situation as the link merely sets things in motion. It says don’t expect anything to happen. I was told to go back to GP who state it’s the government!!

Just to let you know you can't even apply to get on the list if you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

How much better to say it’s been largely successful and provide link to the website for any who think they or their relatives may inadvertently have been missed off? No wonder so many of us are turning away from MSM.

I was one of these missed off the list, however at my age I'm not stupid and didn't need a letter is app or any other such note to tell me what to do. We are of an age that can react on our own, go find some real news. Thousands think the BBC is not worth the money.Good headline?

It's not the government's list, it's the civil service who are responsible for pulling this together. 'A sector of government, career bureaucrats, hired on professional merit rather than appointed or elected. Wiki.'

Even when on this list, it doesn't guarantee priority access to online delivery slots. My highly vulnerable parents are registered, but Sainsburys are not recognising them, so they still can't get access to a slot and, obviously, you can't get through to them to discuss it.

Just stay in for 12 weeks and ask family to help if possible. Not everything is going to be perfect with this. I rcd the letter but joined the nhs volunteer to work from home. If people can they need to take responsibility.

And what proportion of the total is that? Imagine the headlines in normal times - ‘Government compiles list of vulnerable people’. There would be all sorts of fuss about people’s rights.

It's not easy keeping good records of 60 odd million souls, especially when many don't respond to surveys or keep their own records and a bunch are barely literate in English or illegal. How accurate is the BBC's list of good journalists ? Pretty rubbish if you ask me !

Surely you know if you are one of the vulnerable ones

I was missed but registered anyway, msg to say they were checking it out, did get email from Asda the other day issuing a priority pass allowing me to book a recurring delivery slot. A great relief!

All they have to do is contact thier doctor. But let’s keep up the scaremongering paparazzi campaign.

Housebound for years ME patients are off the list for priority shopping. Relying on charity or friends. How is this right? tescos marksandspencer IcelandFoods replied roll calls by charities but not any action.

night And they can't use their common sense...... 🤔 I'm highly at risk but had put myself into lockdown and taking precautions way before letters were sent out... It's called using my brain ... 🤔

But 1.4 MILLION people are on the list. BBC ofcourse won't mention that.

BBCPolitics Yet another example of the poor processes that have characterised the handling of this coronavirus crisis - and once again potentially putting lives at risk.

They won't allow you to ask about this till Boris is better now is not the time be kind etc etc tx .. I know this is the only time you'll post this tho. As we've yet to see you ask anymore about this .... odd

Yeah my wife didn't get one but were just going to follow the advice and self isolate for at least 12 weeks anyway.

Happened to me. Queried it with my GP practice, who didn’t seem to have a clue. In response to my request, they sent me a ONE SENTENCE LETTER, confirming I hadCOPD and addressed to ‘Whomever it May Concern’. The official NHS version was five pages long. Took two weeks to sort out

My shielding letter came from the hospital where I get my care. My friend, a chronic asthmatic got hers from the GP. If the government tried to do it nationally it would take months.

Every family should have made their own call on this weeks ago, lets face it we knew they would fuck this up.

my mum didn’t even get one she’s got copd had cancer only got one lung and just left fuming i am so that left me to do things for her.

Im one of those people, ive applied on the website and got nothing, im relying on friends and church sending food, luckily my meds are being delivered by the chemist but the biggest challenge is getting delivery slots at supermarkets, i managed to get 1 thats 3 weeks away 😞

BBCPolitics Of course, in these unprecedented times things will go wrong. But to all those complaining below why not take the responsibility to ensure your loved ones and people in your society are safe. Have we become such a nanny state that people can no longer make a decision.

they haven't sent all the letters out yet according to my doctors

iwishiwasapolar asthma appears on this list now, worth a read!

You cannot even register in wales, first qurdtion'do u live in England ' if the answer is no u are just advised to follow guidelines, shocking!!

My son has cerebral palsy and is fed through a tube, he gets pneumonia 2-3 times a year ends up in ICU on a vent for 2 weeks but has not had a vulnerable person letter... I spoke to the dr and he hasn't even seen the letters that are going out.....

The list .... It isn’t a guest list. Personally you will know if you are high risk & the advice for couldn’t be clearer ! Stay home save your own life & possibly others ...I didn’t receive a letter but know my own health status .

Yet my husband received a high risk notification despite never having been to the GP or hospital except for once cutting his finger off with an angle-grinder! The letter didn’t elaborate on what condition they thought he had 🤣

This BBC tweet is specifically designed for all the left and anti government to pile in

They changed the criteria for severa asthma several times and it now seems to be at a doctor’s discretion. The whole thing is a shambles and, as many people’s asthma is triggered by stress, causing asthmatics a great deal of worry.

i'm asthmatic and still working.

Define thousands 1 5 10 - then look at % from total more deliberately negative headlines - How about “ Government achieve 99.7% success on identifying Coronavirus risk list”

My brother received his food parcel - very high risk - unfortunately he is fed by tube to stomach because of tracheoscopy - so useless

Disturbing.

so shocking, not. government better rectify this asap

Couldnt make it up, eh. Incompetent clowns

Yep pretty sure my mum one of them! I locked her down weeks before though and luckily there is family and friends around to deliver to her

Refund them the £154 for the license fee then that will help

I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you
