The power of the rightwing press has corroded public debate. But we can do more than just complain about it, says Guardian columist Gary Younge

In February 2016, a few months before the referendum, Donald Tusk published the European Council’s draft plans for renegotiating Britain’s relationship with the EU. David Cameron was prepared for the possibility that Tusk’s response would be less than he hoped for – it was a negotiation, after all. But what really shocked the then prime minister were the front pages the next day.

peterjukes MCCONNELL DOES NOTHING TO PREVENT CHILDREN BEING SHOT IN SCHOOL. Why isn’t this the headline?Sick of this.

Nice that you're actually a left wing outlet again. Wonder how long this lasts.

garyyounge Watching the met police show last night was a eye opener how the Somali heritage policeman was treated is a large part to your pedal revenge hypothesis philosophy

garyyounge Soon, they won't be able to win, even with the press.

The only saving grace is the newspapers are on their way out. Just not quick enough. And I appreciate the irony of responding to a newspaper article.

More the broadcast media than the press, although since Cameron loaded BBCPolitics BBCNews with Tory cronies & had them work with tabloids like The Sun & The Daily Mail who frequently do their morning papers section & set the agenda for the day BBC are just a RW tabloid on TV

Tories more popular among working class than rich, new general election poll showsThe Conservative Party now has more support among working-class voters than the upper classes, according to a new poll which predicts that Boris Johnson will win a 110-seat majority at the general election. Obviously one issue. But you wonder why the working class think that the people at the top of society, with a political philosophy rooted in aspiration but consolidation of the social economic order. Why they would want the same fucking thing? The same society? projected. Certainly good for the Tories this election, but how will this demographic shift change their chances of ever getting elected after 2030? Young- and white collar voters will increase in the coming years, capitalise in them instead. Define what you mean by rich, and is it like 3% Vs 4%, 20% Vs 30%? Thanks. ps good luck with finding new owners.
