The Matrix sent 1999 into a direct comparison of William Gibson's Neuromancer. With a wonderstruck hero, Neo , a deadly femme fatale Trinity , and an elaborate but whimsical plot, viewers had the makings of greatness in front of them - and it showed. The first film in the franchise saw wide critical acclaim, prompting a lot of pressure to build upon its upcoming sequels.The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions saw the story of Neo and Trinity explored even deeper.
