Editorial: When they first started in March the No 10 daily briefings helped people understand the pandemic. Now they are being used to browbeat the public

Boris Johnson’s government began daily Downing Street briefings about the Covid-19 pandemic in the second half of March. Back then, the briefings tried to do two things at once. They addressed an urgent public need for reliable information about the advance of the coronavirus. They also tried to shape the way the public should respond to the health, lifestyle and economic threats that it carried. The structure of the briefings evolved on the hoof. They were far from perfect in a number of ways.

RESIGN BORIS!!

It's time the BBC stopped giving the Government two hours of free air time every afternoon. It inflates Minister's egos and they don't even answer questions.

BorisJohnson maybe Not broken in Scotland. I watch everyday at 12.30 to get my info and take my cue from there. NicolaSturgeon has been formiduble, chalk and cheese.

Knackered system.

Change it then . Boycott the official press conference and start your own where journalists invite ministers and scientists and ask your questions . The government need the media to communicate to the public . If they aren’t doing effectively, change their system for them .

The daily briefings are a none event, perhaps if we had low to average C19 deathtoll we would be listening for the latest tactic we need to adopt to keep the numbers down. How come, after following all government advice we still ended up with the highest death toll in Europe?

In stark contrast to the Downing St English COVID briefings the consistent Nicola Sturgeon's daily update perform a reassuring, unifying function. Pragmatic, compassionate, buck stops here, all questions & follow ups taken & answered approach. She is & knows she is fallable.

‘News is under threat’ is says at the end of the article. Donate. Sorry Guardian it’s time to change a broken system. Your broke. Close down.

now they are being used to browbeat the public? what a load of bollocks, they are being used by shite journalists looking for a gotcha or with axes to grind, the only decent Q's ask have been the publics and Lads Bible ffs.

Superb and accurate piece - unlike the subject matter. Govt's Daily Briefings are now farcical, untrustworthy and 'data theatre' (not my phrase). I no longer listen; too embarrassing. I follow scientists I trust, stick to the original advice and risk assess with my family

The same people that thought Corbyn was a good idea. Think I'll give this article a miss.

With all the shit happening in the world, take the time to hear these sage words from 1939 - please retweet (and check out Paulo Nutini’s song ‘Iron Sky’’)...

Should I read this ? I’m not going to It’s a prescriptive monologue In its Christmas wrapper On May 29th
