The long read: For decades, the way we farm has been degrading land and destroying wildlife. Now there’s a revolution coming – but is it going to create more problems than it solves?

In the last years of the 20th century, Glenfeshie, a 17,000-hectare estate in the Scottish Highlands, was in steep decline. Vince_Rookery very long read, its back to the old saying if you are rich and buy or inherit a farm with money so you don't need to live from your farm and no borrowings you can make all the these wonderful schemes work, if you are a NUT paying £200+ rent to milk more cows you are doomed

No food, no Society to worry about. At least no ridiculous Guardian.

Interesting article. lots of info on how much they are spending but no mention at all on how much EU subsidies these estates recieve simply for sitting on the land as well as the current financial incentives for regenerating hedgerows and scrub land

Fascinating article - UK is the world’s 2nd biggest importer of forest products - landuse isn’t simply a choice of nature vs farming - please stop thinking in silos

Hope you starve first.

So get those horse and carts going..and ploughs!

I think farming will evolve, more farms are turning from long vegetable patches with pesticides to more organic farming where nature takes its course and vegetables and fruit grow naturally.

First the animals, now the land. Do they want us to EatTheRich?

SMH Undeniably cruel, horrible for the environment and totally unnecessary and unnatural. These facts can't be denied and now the industry is reliant on people who simply don't care. Those numbers will fall more and more over time so it is a dying industry. Time to diversify. Time to disinvest from the animal economy! Veganism is the future.
