Tesco tells people to visit stores to get food, saying it is unable to meet online demand

Tesco has said that most food will still need to be purchased in-store amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The supermarket giant said it wasn't able to meet demand as more shoppers stay at home, despite the fact it has increased its online grocery shopping capacity by more than 20%. It said in the first weeks of the virus, there was"significant panic buying", with sales up almost a third."Between 85% and 90% of all food bought will require a visit to a store and here significant changes to the store environment have been implemented to maximise safety for colleagues and customers," chief executive Dave Lewis said.

The chain said it would continue to try and"prioritise home delivery for the most vulnerable in society".The statement came as the chain reported a sharp fall in pre-tax profit for the year to the end of February, down almost 19% to £1.3bn, largely due to restructuring costs in Europe.Tesco said the virus could add almost £1bn in extra costs due to extra staff and store expenses.

Shoddy reporting. Many people on the list are NOT being contacted by Tesco. Tesco taken down customer service email (so how do deaf ppl contact them now?) and it’s impossible to get through to online delivery dept by phone, leaving many vulnerable without food.

Do think they should at least make it more possible to ensure that all disabled elderly or at risk and vulnerable and key workers shopper who wishes to source their food from Tesco online is able to without issue

BBCScotlandNews Thought we were meant to be social distancing, not having to go to potential hotspots 🤔

Click and collect?

Seems IcelandFoods are doing the same as well.

BBCScotlandNews I am high risk and my Waitrose store have none upto June I did not look past then

They need to relax their opening hours back to normal, to reduce the queuing, people don’t like it, so are staying at home

As a picker for Tesco deliveries, I can confirm that the delivery slots how they are now make us have to start at 3am every morning and work for 9 hours, 6 days a week. That Is with 40+ temporary staff. I completely understand the inconvenience for the vulnerable though. 😔

I got my delivery slot no problem. Order turkey and stuffing + pigs in blankets. I'm ready for Xmas.

When are people going to realise we have food shortages in this country they tried to blame panic buying. Our food security has been eroded for the just in time trading model.50 percent of our food comes from EU. They are a disgrace.

Not that easy for some of us. I relied on grocery delivery from them before all this started as I have no car & a disabled child. What they should be doing is filtering out the customers they deliver to based on customers years of previous use &/or proof of disability.

This article is factually incorrect suggesting Tesco have contacted all 110,000 vulnerable people, it has actually only contacted the 75,000 of them who were already customers. If you weren't registered with them prior to Covid19 they won't give you the time of day!

Yet yesterday I read a report that criticised consumers for going to the shops. Can’t have it both ways.

Maybe try training your in store online pickers to keep to your 1 way system and not to push past customers to grab things. Bar Hill store is a mare. Tesco tesconews

ShitChester If they bothered to take precautions I would. Its not that difficult to make all aisles one way yet has t been done. It's a free for all

Oh the irony that my elderly mum can now get a click and collect slot with Sainsbury’s , and so is asking me what I need! She’s cockahoop at prospect of reason to get out...

My hubby is high risk group, I’m not. He’s not going out. I went shopping, kept distance, wore gloves, etc I’m now in day 11 of this horrid virus. The last thing I’d recommend is going to a supermarket

I am going shopping once a week at Tesco. I won’t take delivery slots from people who genuinely need them. I got to my local Tesco at 7.40 and queued for approx 40 min. The staff are amazing and the majority of people are good at socially distancing

Nor Sainsbury’s nor any other supermarket. They’re failing to feed the nation.

Yes the price hikes for basic stuff is effecting the low income ppl, don’t say it’s because manuf offers hv bn taken off. Buying in quantity of more will hv a lowering pricing ability.

Cancelled my delivery last week with two hours notice!!! Had items for vulnerable relatives in there.... but I’m not the worst off for sure so...

Because supermarkets brought in queues waiting up to 2 hrs outside which ppl do not want to b outside for tht length of time. Ppl were spacing in the stores before. But seeing queues they went online shopping!

Tesco upon purchasing items and paying contactless the assistant handed me the receipt. What’s the point of all the measures in place only for them too be let down by been handed the receipt ?

BBCScotlandNews They should buy/hire additional vans, and let workers who can drive deliver. They would be safer doing that than working in store. Spend a fortune over the years at Tesco’s and they cannot deliver during the crisis. Not good enough.

Visited Tesco yesterday and adhered to the rules of the one way system around the shop only to get to the checkout and to be told “just leave you beer in the trolley and I can scan it” then the assistant lent around the screen protector to scan items

I’ve been to Tesco this morning, it was calm, quiet and well stocked with a one way system, someone on the door controlling numbers and someone to wipe your trolley handle on the way in.

Well the have put all their price up 😡 they are hitting the vulnerable ppl pocket as well. 😡😡😡

BBCScotlandNews Is it responsible to say people have to go to the store? Surely there are ways to get more deliveries out or at least increase C & C. Not everyone can queue just to get in let alone run the gauntlet once inside. Tesco need to think outside the box.

If your fit and healthy then don't take up a slot that someone vunerable can use. Shocked that my neighbour had a delivery slot when their daughter works at asda, totally selfish act.

This week is the first time for 6 weeks I have been able to get a delivery slot. I’m a postie and working damned hard at the moment ensuring people get their post and parcels. I think I deserve a food delivery once every few weeks!

Online around here is non existent. No one I know in this rural area has managed to get a slot. The new dates come up as already unavailable and you see the other supermarkets in the village but never Tesco

Absolutely stupid advice, just to maintain profits.

I gave up trying to book a slot ages ago. To be honest I'm lucky we have a co-op and a really good local off licence and a bakers within walking distance. supportyourlocalshops

BBCScotlandNews Haven't seen a single online slot since March 18th .

People in good health should go to the supermarkets, they are clogging up the system for the unfortunate elderly and those with mobility problems.

I wouldn't wish a trip to Tesco upon anyone

That’s fair enough I know many younger people have home delivery 🚚

Really, I got an online order on Monday and my neighbour got one yesterday, alarmist journalism strikes again 👏

one of the issues here is do you only supply the 1.5 million and upset everyone else who use your service under normal conditions then risk loosing them in the future its all about business .

What about people like us, in vulnerable groups, who can't get out & online ring a lifesaver?

asda is no different people.

Supermarket is the worse place. Most ppl dont practise social distancing. They are impatient and ignorant. Virus is still spreading with attitude like this.

This is absolutely ridiculous. How is my nan suppose to order online? She has no idea what a computer is nor a mobile phone. I'm limited to item purchase and a family of five.

That acted far too slowly to protect vulnerable customers. Even now I had to argue with them to get priority delivery and I'm on the sheilding list. For people not on that list it's even worse. They should have realised asking doesn't work from the start.

Tesco emailed this to all existing customers, asking if we can shop in store to do so

Tesco claim to be already allocating slots to those identified as extremely vulnerable. I'm on the govt list, have myeloma, and been an online customer for years, yet not included. They don't answer phone or email so I have no idea how to resolve this. Unimpressed so far.

Have a look Costco and ocado

Let's all add to the 'herd immunity' by going to the supermarket, yay can't wait!

Then hire vans, hire staff, do what it takes, any place where other people are is a potential infection risk. Supermarkets need to get on this.

We are on the NHS vulnerable list that has been given to supermarkets and have been offered slots by Sainsbury’s and Asda. We normally shop at Tesco but have not heard from them. Every little helps isn’t working!!

Although many supermarkets are restricting deliveries to the list of the most critical who are being shielded, but many elderly or vulnerable are not ill enough for that list, but also told to stay home. The instructions are great, but not working!

People disgusted at Tesco being unable to meet the demand of a vile, lazy self centred customer base. Ever thought they are trying to maintain slots for the genuinely needy, incapacitated etc? Oh no, just self self self.

I thought they were taking on more staff to cope with demand

BBCScotlandNews Can’t Tesco make more effort to meet online demand?

Good. I have been saying this all along. Young, fit, healthy people should leave slots for those that really need them. It actually boils my piss.

I'm in a rural area in the North of Scotland and have a small local Tesco. I have coeliac disease and my Tesco keeps reducing the range of gluten free products that they stock. I have to order online for a delivery just to get the same range of products as everyone else but GF

Tesco is the victim of its own short sighted Plannjng here - they knew what would happen with the onset of this pandemic and let the stockpile commence - my custom meant nothing in store or on line and now I shop in local scarborough stores.

Very much aware they’ve been unable. Been getting their deliveries every week for three years, but now we’ve had to put my severely disabled mother at risk and actually go to the shops during this time. Tesco

my delivery tomorrow will be my last for April (booked in March) as I'm unable to find another delivery slot at all. Tesco are offering a refund of my delivery saver fee as they know they can't meet demand

Mad that BBC runs this headline, insighting an awful lot of hate in the comments when actually, they are prioritising the 75,000 clinically vulnerable customers. The way the press have treated companies during this has been disgusting and the constant negativity is tiresome.

My husband & I have been having online deliveries for years from Tesco but now despite the fact that he is a nurse & I am aged 62 (and classed as vulnerable) we can’t get near an online delivery anymore I’m disgusted with them 😡

If supermarkets were safer places I would go. All I see is chaos and idiots. I get deliveries for me and my neighbours.

Well I went online yesterday with little hope. Managed to get a slot for today.

Their website clearly asks you to use deliveries only if you can't click-collect or go to store...

No kidding, they cancelled a delivery I scheduled two weeks beforehand on the day of delivery. Good luck finding any slots now.😡

Better organisation would help one turned up in the street then another an hour later. I understand slots but this should be dropped and tell the customer when it can be delivered

Do Tesco say what elderly, disabled, vulnerable people & those who are self isolating should do. I live overseas & not able to go shopping for my parents

I’m house bound due to autoimmune disease and chronic pain and can not order online shopping for weeks and for weeks to come. Neighbours can only get fresh bread and milk and if lucky t rolls thanksfornothingTesco

BarbaraT09 And there are so many companies offering help to deliver up and down the country namely autocabgpc! Only if they’d engage

We can order all our daily supplies on Apps in China, and even cheaper than offline markets. The goods will be sent to the community within an hour. Can't believe such a big chain market is not able to make it.

The only way I can ensure that I can get my shopping done at Tesco is to go at 8am. If you leave it later the queue forms creating a risk of infection while in the queue. ASDA is worse even at 8am there is a long queue

Yes s as Nd gives a dividend to its share holders while taking g 700 million in rates rebate . Gov stop there money !!

I have been trying to get online delivery from Asda, Sainsbury and Tesco. Can't register for Sainsbury and no slots for ASDA or Tesco in the near future.

So my wife works 12 hrs I have underlying health conditions and look after our 5 kids so when do we shop. We rely on home delivery if and when we can get a slot so please don't tell us to shop instore. But reassure under NO circumstance are we going to ASDA.

have you been in there shop. You stand outside for a hour or 2, so many people in at a time. That’s ok I respect that. But when you go in it’s another story. You are supposed to follow the arrows and wait for the person in front. No one follows that rule very scary. No order

Yep my elderly father and I who are self isolating can’t get a slot at all it’s crazy

More people could shop locally for the essentials at least and support their local businesses. And Tesco could always hire struggling taxi drivers to make local deliveries. They normally benefit considerably from taxis bringing customers to their stores. Get more creative Tesco

Is it me or was Tesco the most inefficient supermarket in the UK well before the pandemic started?

Some of us are in the vulnerable category so are isolating and can't come in,,,, AND we can't get Tesco delivery slots. Don't see them doing anything about that issue. tesconews

I think we know that by no slots being available online. Doesn’t this mean people are having to visit you already. I’m not really sure what you’re expecting

I know most have to. I’ve neither been to a supermarket or shopped online since lockdown. I just use my local Spar. My partner has been in a supermarket. I refuse as these are the hotspots of disease. No point sitting indoors the going into a place full of people present and past

There profits are thriugh the roof plus 700 saved from business rates frozen since lockdown ,paying 560m dividend to shareholders, spare us the poor Tesco Morrison's and the rest ,they are creaming it .

Frankly, if you are fit and healthy and ordering online at the moment then you’re an absolute disgrace. This is a service needed for the vulnerable and key workers. Why are so many so fucking selfish?

It is obvious that the government decided school reopen since they will be required to pay additional compensation by extending school closure and they do wish to avoid this payment.

Also, the government pushed to schools despite of protests by a number of parents and children. Because of this crazy decision, children are forced to go to schools under fear of infections now.

Most of Japanese citizens are not eligible for the compensation since the Japanese government announced that they are going to compensate only for the households whose annual income decreased by half.

BuyBritish, buy local, support small independent shops and producers.

More profit that’s all they are worrying about

What happened to all those drivers you said you were employing?

Every little helps

Shop locally, help small businesses and farmers. If you live in Yorkshire, I highly recommend Sykes House Farm. Check out their easy to use app.

We can’t deliver all online orders. Please help us by coming in. Every little helps!!

Tesco is, I think, the only supermarket complaining about this.

Hire more people

More ventilators required then, oh hang on, you don’t stock those ready in the shelf Tesco

Hardly news

They should only be delivering to the 1.5 million identified as vulnerable anyway. However: better click and collect would help

Tesco had no problem with mine Ordered yesterday delivery today PM 👍👍

'Tesco tells people to visit stores to get food'

Really

Yeah my disabled, housebound father is unable to get a delivery slot from Tesco so looks like I'm doing the shop for him
