I imagined spending my last weeks with friends. Isolated in my flat, I’m having to rethink what a ‘good death’ might be, says Elliot Dallen

As I was lying in a hospital bed last July after complications arising from chemotherapy, my oncologist entered the room with my scan results. Hospital had become familiar to me but his next words weren’t. The treatment wasn’t working. There was little else that could be done. I pressed him to be more specific and was told bluntly that I wouldn’t last a year. I would be lucky to have half that time.

Heartbreaking. The loneliest journey in true isolation can be nothing but. Let’s hope he does see true freedom once more.

Heartbreaking 💔

What a beautifully written article by someone so young. These same thoughts have been circling in my head during isolation. Hoping we both live to come out the other side of COVID19 .

An intensely moving piece.

Please pass onto Elliot- Elliot you are pretty damn inspirational- don't lose hope xx MattHancock how sad is this that people are not getting the treatment they need ..please don't forget guys like Elliot x

A really important, but difficult read. My heart goes out to Elliot Dallen, his family and friends.

Much love Elliot. What a moving piece. The secondary casualties will sadly be under reported. Thank you for publishing this reminder.

Thanks to shielding, terminal friend, called ambulance they can’t take her to hospital and hospice won’t take her. Left to die alone in her home. No I won’t clap for the NHS thank you

Huge thoughts to you Elliot. You are amazing. I do hope you can see your family soon.

Thank you for sharing this Elliot. Know that your words have had a profound impact on so many people. May the universe conspire in helping you see your loved ones again x

So sorry to hear this from Elliot, having been through cancer and survived I’m amazed at his bravery in the face of hearing words one wishes never to hear in life. So cruel that it must end this way in isolation; if I could drive him round to see all his mates I would!

Elliot if you’re reading this then thank you for writing this. You’ve really touched me and made me think less selfishly on what I am missing during this short period. I hope this finishes soon so you get to spend time with your friends and family ❤️

Incredibly moving piece. If it's of any solace, Elliot will have reached and touched a lot of people with this - he certainly did me and I will remember his words.

Words alone are inadequate ,the jouney into death requires touch ,hugs and kisses.Such a very sad article.

This is a wonderful piece. I'm crying, not just for the reason you may think, but because you are so obviously a beautiful, warm person. It leaps off the page. Hoping you get to spend physical time with your loved ones as soon as possible 💗

Don't forget people with illnesses other than Covid-19 | LetterLetters: A woman whose husband has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer calls for a more compassionate approach to social distancing and healthcare So true. With covid 19 going on it is difficult for people with other conditions to go to the clinics and get tests done. They might also become part of the statistics that covid 19 kills. Tell that to whoever made the decision in Scotland to stop testing for cancer at the moment. Already had 2 experiences of relatives being diagnosed too late for me to support this decision. Disgusting.
