Thousands of people in high-risk occupations will now be tested for coronavirus even if they have no symptoms as part of a new pilot, the Department of Health and Social Care has announced.

This includes workers whose jobs require them to come into contact with people or public spaces, such as cleaners, shop assistants or taxi drivers. The tests are expected to begin immediately. The results of the tests will improve understanding of the prevalence of the virus among high risk workers, the DHSC said. Companies included in the trial include taxi firm Addison Lee, BT, services firm Mitie and pharmacy giant Boots.Local authorities in Bradford, Newham, Brent and Oldham will also select groups of people which they deem to be high-risk for asymptomatic testing.

Local authorities will also book tests for people at walk-in test sites. Anyone who tests test positive will need to self-isolate and results will be shared with the NHS Test and Trace programme so contacts can be traced.Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at
