Stylish South London Singer Joy Crookes Is Just Getting Started

It’s hard to believe Joy Crookes is just 23 – her composure is perhaps her greatest gift after singing and songwriting. Joy’s 2021 has been a whirlwind, to say the least. Following the release of her debut album– a beautiful and raw glimpse into her life – she’s just embarked on a European tour, and her London gigs sold out almost immediately.

How is she handling it all? “I’m half a tiger, half a little girl, there’s not really an in between with me,” she says over Zoom from her home in South London, while teasing the bone marrow from a lamb biriyani cooked by her mum. “I’m either strong-headed and nothing gets in my way, or I’m a tiny little girl.”The South London-raised artist is not, as is often assumed, a Brit School alum.

Born to a Bangladeshi-Bengali mother – who pops up in the background of the Zoom along with Joy’s “baby”, her pet cat Diego – and an Irish father, the artist’s music is a reflection of her roots, her struggles, her highs and her lows. She’s inviting her listeners to get to know her.

Joy isn’t just poetic in her music, she is equally lyrical when describing it. She compares listening to her record to the process of falling in love. “You’re walking down the streets [with a new lover] and they’re saying stuff like, ‘This is where I went to nursery, this is where this was; where I did that.’ My record is that: you’ve just fallen in love with me and I’m taking you to all these places.

It’s a personal work, but collaboration was key. She likens the input of producer Blue May to him “taking the driver’s seat”, and “insuring himself on her car”. “That’s never happened to me before.” Asked to single out a favourite track, she can’t do it. “If you gave birth to 13 kids, although one of them might be nicer than the other one, you’ve got to just accept that [you love them all equally].” Love is one of the words I had written down while preparing for our conversation.
