First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says Scotland 'did not get it right' with system for calculating pupils' grades

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, and that"we will do our best to ensure that the hard work of pupils is properly reflected".

There was particular criticism after Higher pass rates for pupils in the most deprived data zones were reduced by 15.2%, in comparison with 6.9% for pupils from the most affluent backgrounds. The Scottish children's commissioner's office said pupils from more deprived areas had been downgraded based on the historic performance of their school rather than their performance.

"That has meant too many students feel they have lost out on grades they should have had, and that that has happened not as a result of anything they have done but a statistical model or algorithm. Mr Swinney will set out plans for how to address the issue at Holyrood on Tuesday, but the first minister said"we will not expect every student who has been downgraded to appeal".

I bet the boys at Eton don’t get down graded !!!

Im no huge fan of SNP polices. However, when she gets it wrong she admitted it and is now trying to do something. I'll lay money that the English and Welsh qualifications authorities are doing the same reverse engineering?

need a break from that presiidente pilla look as per oneself said don’t have any aka never heard of leave ?!?

NicolaSturgeon admits the failings /mistakes additionally and is big enough to apologise and take responsibility. Boris Johnson's government wouldn't do any of that. She's got more sense than Boris Johnson. Respect to her.

ResignSturgeon ResignSwinney SturgeonTheGradeSnatcher

This is going to be a challenge across the UK to get it right. Although in this case we need to ask why the Scottish government has managed the schools poorly for many years. The results speak for themselves.

What is she going to do about it then...

Yes you should be! They have been declining for years. Only increased when the results were made up.

Complete farce. Why not just award the result based on the normal continuous assessment to March and result from pre-lim exam? Education inflation is not fair on anyone. Should be the same percentage of A, B, C etc. awarded every year.

Crumbs. Again sturgeon stands head and shoulders above English MPs even when she gets it wrong. A leader apologising and owning up.

She didn’t get it right and she targeted the most vulnerable kids. Resign you horror NicolaSturgeon

This is weak leadership from NicolaSturgeon. Having done the right but unpopular thing, as soon as a little pressure was applied she folded like a cheap suit. Pathetic.

Why didn’t the algorithm used just focus on pupils previous grades/ potential and teachers knowledge regardless of creed, colour, gender or post code. Only when this model is used will true grades be given.

Scotland did not not get it right for Scottish vote for independence We are a small piece of land and scotland Wales even the north mater WE ARE ALL ONE PEOPLE STOP DIVISION it makes us weaker to the EU

Sorry How will I get the qualifications I've studied for? Sorry!!

Heads will roll for this

profmikelarkin . Let’s see how far they go. 10 suggestions here in: ‘Qfqual builds a concrete wall’ NicolaSturgeon JohnSwinney sqanews uni_scot ucas_online UniversitiesUK heraldscotland TheScotsman

Least Sturgeon has the decency to sort it out Williamson Worse shambles here So Tory SNPs HAVE YOUR ENQUIRY BUT ENGLAND NEEDS ONE TOO ITS THE SAME HERE REPORT THAT BBC Cheap politicing by desperate Torys

Too late for the poor students. So what’s going to be done about it.

How sad

Got a bit more wrong than the school grades. Hospital can't use costing 1.4m a month. Super hospital no one really want to use for fear of infection, and a royal infirmary where for a while you couldn't drink the water from the taps. and more.

So the overall exam pass rates already 4% up on previous year will now increase even higher. Shows the education policies are moving the system in the right direction. Well done Scot Gov!

1. The detail behind the story enrages me. I'm glad the Scottish government are coming to their senses, but this has highlighted how our society is stacked against poor people...

There's a first. Now can we have apologies for state of education in general as that is their main priority, then what about completed hospitals not fit for use etc - lucky this is a tweet and not enough space to complete list

she has got nothing right she is a complete moron she is an example of someone not to be in power along with the rest of them Scotland now needs to rise up and get rid of her and the rest of them You can start over like we will in the UK

Oh Boris! What have you done now!😩

Thought she never made mistakes and everything wrong was down to Boris.

Photo below, from the article. Do you think this person failed their English Language exam! 😋

But at least she comes clean-can you imagine the Westminster government admitting a fault? They seem to think they’re doing brilliantly!

Would be a miracle if Ofqual and the Department of Education admitted this in England and Wales

Understatement of the century 🥴

bbc5live Is it at all possible that many teaches inflated their subjective assessment of their pupils to show what a fine job the are doing?

niocalmccormaig Swings and roundabouts indeed, read it and weep

bbc5live Wow a politician who admits they were wrong , got to be a 1st

bbc5live Bet she blames the english

Yet, rejoining the EU would have prevented this?

night Understatement.

Does the snp get anything right?

The calculation of pupils' grades is chicken feed in comparison to the years of damage done to Scottish education by the SNP. Perhaps the grades reflect the truth?

Another fiasco! Dreading my daughter getting her results in a couple of weeks

I hope that a much fairer way is found to judge grades. I just hope the person in the third image down isn't hoping for a top grade in English. 😬

No way!!! Nicola Sturgeon admits that she is not perfect!!! Now that is a head line!!!

understatement of the century

I’m waiting for her to say “this is because of Westminster”

Glad she has come clean, now some of the SNP cyber warriors will take back the pish they were spouting all weekend about independent org etc nothing to do with the SG.

Don’t be sorry, just tell us when is the independence referendum?

SHOCK. The SNP get something completely wrong. What's new.... 😂😂😂😂

Very reassuring for kids expecting their results next week

1st day of school September : Please go to the hospital for your first lesson in 'The plays of Shakespeare'. If late go directly to cemetary

Yes we know that. We knew that last week.

They cant even mark exam papers properly, but they can open schools perfectly safely. Of course

nickeardleybbc Might have been better to postpone rather than cancel. There’s no right answer to this one.

Has she managed to blame Westminster yet?

moral victory ..Awh union of unionism

At least she admits it unlike boris

Poorer students will suffer in 'unfair' A-level grading model, UK parents warnSocial mobility groups say Ofqual has a ‘moral imperative’ to address any exam result injustices that may occur Let’s hope the Universities will be understanding when accepting lower grades for their places 🙏 I understand parents worry about their child’s grade, but without actually seing the mathematical mode how can this article say it affects those from poorer backgrounds with such certainty? I think the model should be published... it may be already? I don't really think that this is any different from usual 🙄
