'Please don't do this,' pleads Steam Deck designer about recent SSD mod 🙏

. If you're dropping any fresh component into the system that asks for more power than the original parts the machine's power and cooling solutions were designed for, then you're liable to make a loss in battery life and gain a chunk in heat.

Hi, please don’t do this. The charger IC gets very hot and nearby thermal pads should not be moved. In addition, most 2242 m.2 drives draw more power and get hotter than what Deck is designed for. This mod may appear to work but will significantly shorten the life of your Deck. https://t.

Might as well respond to this, I absolutely agree with this guy.Mod at your own risk!I am taking risks by opening the device and working on it, and it is mostly just as a proof of concept.Thread continues below. https://t.co/upg15VxmhzThey also note that, via the temperature sensors of the Deck itself,"thermals of the device have not shown any changes."

They're not challenging Yang's obvious knowledge as Deck Papa, however, they are investigating what works within the confines of the handheld device, and stating they are"planning on going further and finding ways to deal with my own concerns regarding the mod." Which honestly is part of why we love the Steam Deck. It's such a raw device, and so damned PC. I mean, it is a PC, but it's also a handheld gaming device that could easily have been delivered in such a locked down form that would render it almost impossible for anyone but the seriously technically gifted with a soldering iron to get inside, much less update, swap, or mod anything.

Of course. You cannot tamper your consoles, it can damage them

So they're stepping back from the 'this will end your life' stance?

It has hot swappable microsd card support, that's the way to go. Can even give a little bit of that old school cartridge feel if you have them in a little carrying card putting different games in each one. I had a 512 for my main games and 256 for emulation.

I mean, the open nature of the Deck would just allow the lock to be bypassed, making such an endeavour pointless (like Nvidia's hash limiter, that was defeated). At least those who want to take the risk, can, and they know it's at their own risk.

Who the fuck has a steam deck, and is already modding it?

At least they give you the option

As expected, 'Steam Deck lovers' love to waste their time tinkering with the hardware instead of playing the actual games. Which is why Steam Deck already failed since day one.

if valve lock it, the backlash will be huge. One of the campaign for steam deck is its repairability.

Dear Valve, If you sell me a Steam Deck here in Australia I promise to treat it well and not do anything to it that you would not recommend.

Saw on reddit it’s not hotter and the power draw is the same not really into this bs

I just bought a 512GB Micro SD card. 🤷 It's really not that noticeable.

Context for people only reads the title. Guy warns about how doing the mod is hotter, and uses more power than what the deck was designed, which shorten product life.

The steam deck doesn’t use SSD?

i promise i wont, if i ever get my pre order

God, pc “gamers” stop messing with things?

I will be sure to not do this after I get my device 10 years from now :)
