over the removal of the Colston statue, and six people accepted conditional cautions over their involvement.Mr Jenrick said any decision to remove heritage assets in England would require planning permission and a consultation with local communities, adding that he wanted to see a "considered approach".
He said: "We live in a country that believes in the rule of law, but when it comes to protecting our heritage, due process has been overridden. That can't be right."What has stood for generations should be considered thoughtfully, not removed on a whim or at the behest of a baying mob."The Metropolitan Police say they are seeking to identify those responsible for the damage
Speaking in June, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "The statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square is a permanent reminder of his achievement in saving this country - and the whole of Europe - from a fascist and racist tyranny.
As long as there are no law to banning democratic protest and the voice of the people!
Should have done this a long time ago.
Hardly the most important issue at the moment.
BBCWorld
BBCPolitics Jenrick 😂😂😂😂😂😂
BBCPolitics Nice distraction from 100,000 deaths and Govt corruption and uselessness. How many Tory MPs and donors have huge estates which were built on slavery? No wonder they dont like the truth coming out Tick tock, these bastards wont be here forever We cant afford this corrupt Govt
is there any statues left !
BBCWorld Good initiative sir
BBCPolitics this is not our way. so yes it needs doing.
Just put a baton over the head of anyone who tries it. No need to overcomplicate things.
My ancestor was a slave boat captan, does that mean my family should be erased. You really think toppling a statue changes anything or is it out of sight out of mind. These people need to mature into rational adults and move on.
It is, at the very least, criminal damage. Those who deface or remove statues, REGARDLESS OF ANY PERCEIVED OFFENCE BY THE SUBJECT, should be arrested, charged, convicted and if applicable, imprisoned.
minamaya13 How about not memorializing people who have done terrible things?
Qldaah
Qldaah Lol then when the RWNJs start doing it, like in the states, the laws will be used against their own.
BBCWorld Why? That’s peaceful in America.
Why not put Jimmy Saville's statue back?
These statues were put up by the rich as monuments to themselves. This is about reminding us, the little people, who is in charge Sickening that in the week they start to moot reducing the employment rights of the living they talk of increasing the rights of statues of the dead
They're doing it all the wrong way round 🤣 - shitty National Front government.
Bravo to the government's actions
There's already laws to deal with vandalism and criminal damage. This 'law' is just to keep the readers of the Telegraph / Express / Mail happy. Maybe Jenrick should focus on all the real housing problems. That's when he's not rushing decisions to save Desmond £45m in tax.
About time
Why the government was glorifying slave traders that should be illegal in it's self. Keep them in museums
I’m not surprised with what’s going on but one would have thought that something would have been done before now to stop these idiots destroying our heritage.
AvonandsomerRob I thought there were laws against criminal vandalism, acts of violence, public disorder, intentional damage to property? Just shows how fucked up the UK has become BorisJohnson Nigel_Farage pritipatel
Especially as the statue is likely to be an MPs friend or family 🙄
BBCPolitics About bloody time !! Never mind new laws! It should be illegal to mount any British monument - I and the country paid for it !! 😡
BBCPolitics Good
BBCWorld Statues of racist people that are legitimatly old should be taken down from public view and out into the relevent museum where proper context for their actions and why they were glorifyed can be given
BBCWorld You learn from history good & bad monuments are a reminder of history.
BBCPolitics With the CEO of NHS England saying today that NHS has never faced a more precarious situation and medical bodies 'among those' calling for emergency laws to protect doctors and nurses from potential unlawful killing charges, does this Gov have its legislative priorities straight
It’s a diversion from the current debacle.
BBCWorld Why is this vandalism accepted and discussed in OP-EDs as 'what should we do'? If I broke off or ripped off part of the local supermarket or post office building, or damaged a Christmas tree, I'd be arrested. Is it that hard to do the same here?
there is a simple solution to the problem! Stop erecting statues! We dont need them!
BBCPolitics Arw there currently no laws protecting historical monuments from baying mobs?
BBCWorld There are some people from the past who we might find offensive by today's standards or they may have links to slavery but I wholly agree that these statues should not be just torn down by mobs or removed by local councils and removal should only be by formal process.
Then we need to pull down the Nightingale Centre. Nightingale was racist, ageist and sexist in only allowing white, middle class, English women to join her nurses. And while we are at it pull down the Vatican, many Popes owned slaves. Where will it end?
Exactly
Good!
BBCPolitics Covid spreading buffoons!
Trump brought in an Executive Order after the BLM protests that pushed for ten years prison sentences for people found guilty of defacing statues/Federal property. Only now it's going to be used on the violent insurrectionists at the Capitol. A case of backfiring spectacularly.
The laws are already in place and have been for 100's of years, they just need to be enforced fully, with zero tolerance, and for the justice system not to fold like origami under pressure
I would think so to.
It’s called the police!!
Jenrick was pretty insulting in his comments about this.
One of the most shameful examples of reporting in history of , indulging mob rule and all those who sought to justify the vandalism of Bristol city centre. BBC reporting was a disgrace on the Colston attack. CommonsDCMS OliverDowden julianknight15 BradyTony afneil
BBCPolitics deffo new law needs making as a minority want to overthrow our ways and impose theirs that's the reality also many of protester not even English they foreign student's
This time I'm pretty agree with that, all countries should having a law to protect its historical monuments
BBCPolitics And this is today’s big news?
What a load of twaddle, but expected from this hard right leaning government. They have more concern for their straight male white supremacist hay days than for feelings of our 'evolved' modern inclusive society. Put these offensive statues in museum with an appropriate plaque!
BBCPolitics Are they planning a statue of BoJo anytime soon? Asking for an angry mob.
BBCPolitics Good stop these unlawful mobs doing whatever they fancy.anyone caught should be imprisoned. Just because you don't like something doesn't give you the right to get rid of it.
BBCPolitics About bloody time too 😡😡
BBCPolitics Unlike U.K. laws that scrutinised government
BBCPolitics Or Sadiq Khan
BBCPolitics Nice to see the Tory priorities over and above child hunger. Lower than vermin.
BBCPolitics do some real journalism. This is a story from the torygraph not official govt policy. Wait until it actually happens. And in the meantime what about the actual lies of Johnson et al that you refuse to report. Fucking useless as always.
BBCPolitics They care more about statues than human life🙄
UK government planning new laws to stop England's governments being removed 'on a whim' by protesters. Wedge, thin end of?
I agree that the status of statues should be decided by local communities following wide consultation. We cannot have groups, of whatever political persuasion, arbitrarily removing them.
News laws needed for criminal damage......who knew!?
Protestors behaving like animals, how very American...what's next looting in the name of the environment
How reassuring to know that our valiant guv'nors have got their priorities right! Pass the g&t, Cynthia, would you!
BBCWorld Any To Get The Government Removed Quickly?
New laws have never stopped people doing what's right in the past, and they won't in future.
We will end up with no statues as there is always some group or other that disagree with them being there
BBCWorld About time.🍻
As it should be. Last years mob attack was disturbing and unwarranted.
👀 ☠️ 🐈⬛
Jenrick is a numptie.
BBCWorld Article is dumb. If you find out your heroes are shit people then move the statues to museums for the sake of history. Statues convey a symbolic honour so no; They shouldn’t be in public spaces just because “it’s been always there”.
You won’t change our history by trying to destroy it Your just sad individual who have nothing better to do
BBCWorld Some protesters do it ‘on a whim’. Others heed the ‘Trump call’.
I don't understand why these mobs want to erase history. We learn from history so we don't repeat the bad parts. The whole of history has some aspects of slavery. It was slaves that built the pyramids are you going to tear them down. Look to the past and learn don't destroy it
Speaking in planning terms only. The Colston statue was Grade 2 listed. Any works, such as repositioning in the harbour, required the consent of the local planning authority. Carrying out unauthorised works to a listed structure is a criminal offence.
Great news. Protect history and culture from the idiots!
BBCWorld I am from Brazil if it would happen here in my country theese British people would say 'they are under-developed'and you British are what?
How does this proposed new law stop a mob tearing down a statue?
with all the problems at the moment this has to be the most inconsequential.
Distraction .
It's called vandalism or criminal damage. The laws are already there, they just didn't enforce them did they.
BBCWorld All statues of colonisation through genocide murder land grab forced religious proselytism destruction and thievery of cultural heritage must be destroyed and put its place in the dark chapters in history of humanity
100,000 dead and they are pushing this shit for the country’s idiots to gobble up.
BBCWorld I'd like to see less removal, more creation, if there is history that is untold, let's tell it. Our ancestors (pretty much regardless of nationality) were mostly shitty people, we can look at it in a more nuanced way than just tearing it down. More diverse statues also? Sure!
They just need to enforce adequate current legislation.
Pity. We can’t have laws to stop children going hungry Ronjo
Really, isn't there any more pressing issues than maintaining the image of Colonial England
Not got much to do in parliament then! I suspect this item is not top of the peoples agenda. And will it be UK or England!
Why waste time and resources creating another law to be ignored by 'baying mobs'? If our education system was honest about our history these monuments would be seen as a reminder to everyone how we should behave and not make the mistakes of the past again.
BBCWorld Stop the destruction. These monuments must be used to educate and a reminder of our ugly past
The UK government is the servant of the British people, not their master.
Good!
Happy to see these measures brought in. These thugs need to learn from the past, not destroy it..
Even the 'Britain furst' Jebends think this is a massive waste of time, and they keep are monuments safe by urinating on them. Not sure wtf this is even solving, the offending statues are in the themes and nobody knows WTF the others are about.
Excellent news, mandatory prison sentences, hopefully
About time......
Anyone who destroys a statute should be imprisoned for decades. It's a destruction of history and no one is entitled to destroy them.
Good. Wanton vandalism.
Imagine if the Italians judged their statues as harshly as the Colston statue was judged, all statues and monuments to the cruel Emperors of Rome would be torn down, but it would be historical loss which righted no historical wrongs to Christians fed to the lions,or the enslaved.
BBCWorld The monuments have to go and be replaced with monuments of Muslims, that is the way of the world.
BBCWorld Speaking of heritage...
Dead cat alert! Whenever this govt royally screw up (pandemic response, rapidly unravelling brexit), they stick another culture wars log on the fire.
Oooh the Woke BBC don’t like the fact the government will stop leftie officials taking down heritage statues and monuments.
Good. About time.
Or you could be in touch with the public, seeing as you represent them.
BBCWorld UKParliament Not the right way to approach this. Don’t divide like the US has. Why not preemptively remove those statues or appropriately contextualize them in place?
About bloody time.!!
Good
The Coulston statue wasn't taken down 'on a whim'. Campaigns were asking for it to be removed for years.
Whim?
oh finally! do you realise that?
Stop the world and let me get off
Hmmmm, statues getting protection. How much tax payers money will that cost, and wouldn't it be best spent elsewhere!! Homeless
Its not the monuments that need removing its the government.
This has smacks of the bully & wickedWitchofWitham aka PritiPatel , she is also trying to ethnic cleanse travelers and criminalise Trespass
BBCWorld I suppose they grow up but then another generation of yobs takes over the baying Yes, you need laws to stop this nonsense
BBCWorld Monuments record history. The youth of the present are ignorant, they do not know where they come from and where they are going. It deserves punishment to remove the monuments.
BBCWorld Great idea. See “Trump, Donald” for some pointers.
BBCWorld Hello gaiiiii
Good
How about passing new laws to end poverty! BorisJohnson
RobertJenrick goes full Trump and tries using Woke as a term of insult. Either he is incredibly ignorant as to it's meaning or is deliberately being a bigot, either way not a good reflection on Conservatives or BBCNews Marr coronavirus UK SayNoToRacism
BBCWorld Really? Why? Here in the US, we don’t care about history. Only about feeling good. If something offends you, tear it down, burn it, destroy. Once it’s gone...you pretend it never happened. We love our snowflake society here. Easier to control and dupe. Watch, the best is coming.
Good 👏🏻
I would have thought that damaging these statues/monuments already constitutes Criminal Damage...?
BBCWorld better than racism! and why are they destroying them? because of your selfish ignorance!............. christian hypocrites!...... just saying_______
good luck with that pal
BBCWorld It’s a lump of metal
At last common sense
BBCWorld Yeah leave statues alone. If the requirement now is perfection, we can't have any. Everyone before, everyone now, everyone to follow are but frail, imperfect humans.
BBCWorld If they moved as quickly to bring about social and racial equality as they do with protecting some statues maybe we'd be impressed.
Our Industrial Heritage should also be protected.
Monument’s are least of their issues... 😎
Breaking news! 3 million self employed about to go bankrupt because The Chancer can’t do his job properly! RishiSunak BorisJohnson ExcludedUK just saying
No one section of society owns history.. It belongs to all of us.. and we can all learn from it, but not by cancelling it out and pretending it never existed, like the loony left and so called liberals would have it.
Thank goodness we are going to get tough with these people who hate our country
Is criminal damage not enough then?
But isn’t it really about the need to make content? And for those with no talent or expertise performance vandalism is the only resort.
For those of you agreeing with this bullsh*t, tell us all what you’re frightened of? Probably nothing. Yet you have a government which will f**k you over in a heartbeat. Just a distraction. fuckthetories
BBCWorld Isn't it a bit late
Good.....we don't want anymore over privileged rich kids with dreadlocks and rainbow jumpers thinking they run the show.
Not before time, bloody blm
How about councils. Too little too late
While I don't see the need for 90% of them; there were laws to protect them. Just deems wrong they need more laws to give the impression they care. A tad ironic they want to protect BLM protest statues & not UK statues. They do seem to promote it.
BBCWorld To late
Bit late as always
Good.
People wanting to erase history by vandalising statues are dangerous. We must learn from it, instead.
The law of criminal damage already covers this- what about when council’s do it?
Councils can’t get rid of the damned things quick enough. Most are purely urinals.
“On a whim” is that BBCs words? If it is then they need to get their head out of their arse and do a little research about campaigns prior to the statues being removed. Put them in a museum ffs
Good. It should be up to a council vote. Not a mob. If we applied mob logic to everything we wouldn’t have a democracy. It’s just who can be the most extreme wins
Jail would be a good reaction,to law breakers, no consequences no good behaviour
Any surprise that its Tories pushing through this law to protect a doctored history of morally destitute people. Whilst the money Colston donated has gone to many good causes it was obtained by the most reprehensible means, much like how many Tory MPs have acquired wealth...
IF I donate some money to the conservative party, can I change the name of a street oh and pay no tax either?
What? No freedom of mob rule...sounds like capitalism
5 years, no parole.👍
11-month-old Joshua is battling acute lymphocytic leukemia. He urgently needs a life-saving stem cell transplant. His family is trying and needs help to cover the cost of his treatment. Please donate, share or retweet—support his fight against cancer:
Pity they don’t have the same concern for actual people like the homeless or starving children as they do for inanimate statues.......... Scum
On a 'whim'... Statue of an individual who may have been complicit in slave trade, oh like the Monarchy....hmmmmm
Wtf put a electric face up . Or wire fence a glass block.
100,000 dead from a Pandemic, economy collapsing, shelves in supermarkets getting bare but no, the important thing is Tory Culture Wars.....
Look at how quick they move but let kids go hungry.
It wasn't on a Whim it was because Britain's Colonial past reflected in the aggrandizement, of individuals who gained enormous wealth and social stature through Kidnap and Enslavement practices and had Statues erected in their honour. Future generations still live here.
Yet living people won't get protection from the Covid virus due to UK Government incompetence! rampupproduction
Criminal damage laws would cover it, use them ! Use the time saved constructively, and at speed, rather than the out dated snails pace of British government, in sorting out establishment created poverty?
I agree. This was an act of violence. If we are to move forward, it must with diplomacy and civility.
Which they are, constantly (being removed by baying mobs). Not a day goes past ... Meanwhile in the real world people are dying in their thousands.
Priorities
How about we remove the name of nelson mandela from every street that has the name of the terrorist for a start
Planning you say planning,.. Shouldn't be aloud in the first place
Bristolians had been following the proper procedures for removing that statue for literal decades, with a large majority in favour of removal, and they were ignored for DECADES. Protests happen when the people are ignored.
Oh good - great to see the 'Government' - and I use the term very loosely - directing their resources to the really important matters at the moment. Sod the catastrophe that is the COVID-19 situation, or the chaos that is Brexit. 10DowningStreet
Berlin Wall?
Nothing more pressing going on at the moment eh, let's deal with statues 🙄
Amen to that.
About time. Mob rule cannot be allowed. If you allow it for one group then you allow for all and I wouldn't like to see that world.
Any new laws for the deconstruction of systemic racism in this country and the protection of the rights and freedoms for the black community?
Oh dear. The bbc won’t like that.
The best was those chaps in Nuneaton who guarded the statue of George Eliot. Absolute hero idiots.
Let's not worry about destroying the fishing industry , the creative industry ability to tour Europe, the rest of the border red tape burden. Let's talk statues ☠️😺
Legislation is powerless against a 'baying mob' This just posturing by a populist government.
How about they debate the list of statues/monuments that are linked with racism or they do not represent something that’s against human rights in the Parliament? Surely, there are millions of mountains around the world, some are good and some outdated or irrelevant to 2021!
So the law for criminal damage doesn’t cover status?
Absolutely correct!! Whatever it is,it is our history good or bad. No time for these goody two shoes BLM crap. All lives matter and it is what it is !! Deal with it . Well done UK government 🤧
People have been asking for years for these racist statues to be taken down and we were ignored. Rip them tf down.
BorisJohnson michaelgove Is that the best you can do post Brexit?!? Where's the list of exciting new things now we've left?
