Milk, shampoo... but what about garden plants and children's colouring books? What exactly should you go out shopping for during the coronavirus lockdown?

Easter eggs, milk, exercise weights, garden plants, shampoo, children's colouring books - just what exactly should you go out shopping for during the coronavirus lockdown?

The government's restrictions brought in on 23 March says people should only be leaving their houses for"very limited purposes" - one of those is to buy"basic necessities".two people who had met at a house party and were"going to the shops for non-essential items".While someIt's led some shoppers to question what they can buy when heading to the shops. What are you classing as 'non essential'? We can live off bread and cheese.

"Shoppers should follow government advice and shop as infrequently as possible during the lockdown, stocking up on food, medicine and essentials only when necessary. "If there is confusion among consumers about which products are essential, it is really important that the government provides the utmost clarity about what is expected of people, so that the vast majority who want to act responsibly have all the information they need to do so."

If the shop stocks it you should be able to buy it! People aren spending time in their gardens for mental well being people are letting their children colour for mental well being.. see where Im going here

Common sense is needed here. If you are out to buy nessesity products in a supermarket anyway, then picking up a colouring book or something for the garden, or things which help you keep sane, is also a nessesity. But going out just for these things are not nessesary

I'm saving lives, by staying home and only going out to the supermarket, so I deserve my reward. I am distancing myself from everyone so I shall have 36 day matured steak and I shall enjoy a beer. Yes, I agree we should not go out unnecessarily but we need to enjoy being at home!

You can download pictures to colour in and you can order plants online. No need to go out for them. Milk and shampoo are needed though.

You go out shopping as infrequently as posdible for essentials. However if you see something else whilst you are there then you buy it.

Is this a serious news story or some delayed April fools joke. People don’t know what’s essential shopping!

it what ever the police decided in that moment, is rifles and bullets could be classed as essitianal, for use against a police state

you get forced out for milk, bread, dairy, fresh meat etc while in the shop u may as well get some treats to make life bearable.

Stop stirring things up for heavens sake.

Essentials are different for every person, if the shop is open and stocks it then it should sell it - We all need to show common sense. Garden and kids stuff are essential for everyone mental health

Surely if you allow the sale of compost and plants and seeds, people can grow there own veggies. Lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions, peppers, beans etc. Which helps them survive and get exercise at the same time and stops them being bored and breaking the stay home rules.

Let's skirt around nobody is reporting online shopping has been shut down forcing you out, but are these essential items, sugar, eggs bread flour, staples like tin beans. Good luck getting those, out of stock, we have food shortages, report that, dare ya..

Go out for whatever you want

Different things are going to be essential to different ppl. If you're picking things up in the same store whilst your out doing your essential shopping what is the issue. Ppl need to get off their high horse about what is and isn't essential. It will depend on your own situation

And yet Aldi are running TV ads for Rattan garden furniture.

Surely common sense needs to reign here? If you’re going to the supermarket anyway to stock up on your essential food products, then surely it’s okay to pick up other ‘non-essentials’ from the same shop? 🤷🏻‍♀️

If one has to go to the shops for food what’s wrong with buying a plant or flowers too. Every penny spent helps the economy surely?

Supermarkets and shops are limiting the amount of people in stores at any one time. If you make that one trip a week and stick to that. Why can’t you pick up a few items to keep you busy or happy. Having that restraint and keeping visits to the minimum is the problem.

Growing your own veg, can't possibly be a bad plan.

What does it matter if you are buying Easter eggs as long as you are going out to buy essentials? You’re in the shop anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Go shopping.. get what you want. Come home. If the aisle is open then you can buy what you want 🤔😐🙄🤣

Go out and buy what u like if the shops sell it

I think we should be allowed the buy plants or they should be donated to care homes etc . Plants will die otherwise . Also it’s good for mental health & a bit of exercise . Sod you COVID19Pandemic !

My rules are, so long as I maintain social distancing and hand sanitizing rules, if I do not endanger anyone, if the shop is open, I can buy whatever is on sale. I am not a rebel I have been out around 4 hours in total since the 'lockdown'.

Paints, tiles brushes etc and plants, compost etc all help people in lockdown to keep active and therefore helps their mental health through this difficult time. Therefore to those people could be essential.

So many arseholes in the world these days, maybe the human race shoukd just die out and leave it to the animals.

There is a secret pandemic of stupidity on this globe and we’re not doing enough to sort it.

Stop it! If a shop is open you can buy it.

Whatever you like that is on the shelves obviously.

Definitely not toilet paper.

Looking after our own and our family's mental health is very important. So a colouring book, cd/dvd, plant, bunch of flowers could make a huge difference.

My mom made a mask for me.... happy easter 🐣.... fill kitchen towel as filter....

Just wash your damn a$$es every time you potty.

Everything’s essential to the workers manufacturing the items.

Wish the BBC would take a minute off knocking everything, plenty time for that when this is all over.

If it’s on sale you can buy it. If the police don’t like it they should speak to the shop owners, not the customers.

Ffs BBC STOP MAKING THIS HARD for EVERYONE common sense that’s all what is required 😡

If it’s on the shelves, on show, people would assume it can be bought!!!

Anything that provides a bit of sanity.

Surely this is largely determined by which shops remain open? If your target shop is still trading then it must be considered 'essential,' by the Government at least.

Good work telling people what to panic buy

I received cross looks I had for a basket full of savoury snacks and desserts. Are we supposed to be in isolation and punish ourselves too? I don’t understand. I never stocked up because I simply cannot afford to. Am I unable to have treats for that reason?

If the shop is allowed to trade, buy what you like. It really is that simple. Let's not muddy the waters.👍

Food and supplies are the priorities. But as long as it's on the shelves and someone can afford it, why not? That's their freedom. And yes, go for grocery shopping, buy additional items, no harms. Went out just for those?! No point risking yourself and others.

More fear mongering from the BBC. Buy whatever you want if it's on the shelf. At the end of this we will need an economy which is being trashed by those millionaire News presenters who will NEVER be affected.

I think all those Easter eggs stacked idly on shelves because people have higher priorities should be distributed freely to all frontline staff and the one that thought of the idea.

You don’t need shampoo. It’s a bit like smoking - it replaces things that it’s taken away. Just wash your hair with water and after 2 weeks you’ll see. Good time to try this too.

You should only go out for essentials but if you’re already at the supermarket buying them then there’s absolutely no harm in picking up something in store as a boredom breaker or to help your mental wellbeing whilst you’re there or a little treat to help get through this I say.

You should be able to buy whatever the shop you are in is selling!

If you are at the shop getting milk - then why can’t you grab an Easter egg - people go for fags!

If it's in the buddy supermarket while you are buying food then who cares. Good god.

Well if shops stop TV advertising un essential products they would not be confused.

Not your business!

Surely if your out getting your shopping you can add anything else the shop sells to your basket..

If I see a pretty hologram vase in the Sainsbury's Home range that's going to make me happy, it's going in the trolley along with my grocery shop whilst I'm there 🙄🙄🙄

I have discovered that the essential foodstuff for WFH daughter is chocolate peanuts. It keeps British industry running apparently.

I'll buy what I want, when I want. I don't panic buy, so no problem. If everyone just bought what they needed, there wouldn't be a problem there either. Stop being greedy. It's not hard. Problem is, people are greedy, fussy and spoilt. See how you last on army rations

Shoppers aren’t confused unless they’re thick It’s on the shelf, it’s available for sale, you’re in the shop ergo you can buy it

Does it matter - if it is in the shop and so are you, you can buy it. Surely the regulation said essential items to differentiate the sort of shops that could stay open and prevent browsing.

“First world problems”...really BBC. How about having all these people actively participating to help the millions who live in shanti towns, slums or hut with five kids that loss their job and don’t have food. A coloring book? Really?

Would I make a journey to buy an Easter egg? No. But if I am out buying essentials then I have no issue whatsoever in adding any non-essentials to the shop.

If you are buying your essentials and other items are there, why not be able to buy them, I can understand if you purely went out for that item only!

If I'm in sainsburys I will buy whatever the hell I want provided it is on sale. Shove your petty advice (and your licence fee) BBC.

If the shops open then whatever is in it is available to buy. Simples.
