Saudi Arabia has announced a new tourist scheme in an effort to open up the ultra-conservativeAllowing more tourists was hailed a ‘key milestone’ as the kingdom seeks to boost visitor numbers to 100 million each year by 2030.
The one-year, multiple entry visa scheme for 49 countries unveiled on Friday permits stays of up to 90 days and marks the first time foreigners will be able to visit solely for the purpose of tourism. The visa information website also indicated a let-up in the typically strict dress code for visiting women, requiring shoulders and knees be covered but not demanding they wear the full-body abaya.
