The man, who was seen on CCTV leaving the gallery with the piece, snatched it while a staff member was with another customer.

A brazen thief who walked out of a US art gallery with a Salvador Dali etching worth £15,650 will"find it very hard to sell", one of the gallery's owners has said.

David Schach, co-owner of Dennis Rae Fine Art in San Francisco, said:"I don't know why they would do it. Without the contacts they will find it very hard to sell. I don't know what they'll do with it. "People think that, because something's expensive, it's worth something. But it's only worth something if you can sell it."

The thief struck on Sunday afternoon, walking out with an etching for Burning Giraffe, an 51x66cm artwork by the celebrated Spanish surrealist, who died in 1989.The man, who was filmed on CCTV leaving the gallery carrying the large piece was in and out in seconds, snatching it while a staff member was with another customer, Mr Schach said.

"He was in and out of there in a shot. He probably did it in less than a minute," Mr Hopkins added, admitting the gallery's security camera wasn't on at the time.
