Rugby World Cup: Wales fans told to cover tattoos in Japan

Keith Dunn, the honorary Japanese consul to Wales, said:"We like tattoos in Wales.

A 2015 survey found that 56% of hotels and inns did not allow tattooed guests to use communal bathing facilities. The organisation suggested that hot springs - onsens - and bath houses could offer visitors stickers to cover up tattoos, or set aside specific times of day when tattooed bathers can use the facilities.

The advice is not limited to fans, with tattoos common among players, especially Pacific Islanders and Maoris.Wales player James Davies had his nickname"Cubby Boi" tattooed during a trip to Las Vegas

My uncle Jack was covered in them, and prisoner there in world war 2 ,he told me a story what they did to some with them not printable

BBC bullshit .

Keep safe and cover up. Respect their customs. Rugby fans as usual leave a respectable legacy. At least you all can have a drink.

That's the rules in Japan pity the UK doesn't have the same rules about the way people dress.

Yet people who come to our country don't respect the way we carry out our lives.

Yet they have vending machines selling used panties and graphic novels featuring under age characters

It’ll be for all those tattoos that spell ‘Wnker’ in Japanese

Only Wales fans?

Brit: People coming to this country should respect our culture Japan: We feel the same. Could you please cover tattoos while you're here? Brit: GOD GET WITH THE TIMES THIS IS JUST SILLY WHAT A STUPID CULTURE TO HAVE

In Rome, do like the Romans do!

Tattoos in Scotland are called tramp stamps

I should think so.

If you are in the big cities ppl dont care much about tattoed ppl as they used to although you were going to small vilages or temples in Japan. for sure u will get attention for being foreigner and not cus of ur tattos.

Have to agree with Japanese on this one, cover those tattoos up they look stupid and make you look like a criminal thug. Looks even worse on women.

Maybe the Japanese are offended by someone looking like they’re covered in grannies wallpaper

Otherwise they will be treated like Yakuza members in Japan..

There is another western habit that the Japanese find disgusting, blowing your nose into a tissue and putting it in your pocket. When we asked what their alternative to this practice was, we met a wall of silence. But you will find the Japanese very pleasant and hospitable.

Could have found out about Japanese culture of tattoo’s before he went, like I did.

Always respect local customs...we preach that to migrants. So we should act accordingly

Intolerant Japan

I think the Japanese are smart enough to realise tattoos are prevalent in other countries who'll be visiting for the RWC (& Olympics) and make allowances.

Well done Japan so many people looking a complete mess and the world in general knows how Japan frowns on such so called body art

Stupidness get a gripe Japan and get in the 2019’s

Come on people they hosting not us ,play nice and abide by their rules and everything will be Cushty.

Once the Japanese have perfected digital tattoos then your skin will be a Flexible 16K OLED display.

For what reason? Loads of people have tattoos in Japan. It's not just Yakuza who have them.

Les rugbymen devront cacher leurs tatouages au Japon. Ça sera dur pour certains. Vont-ils porter des cagoules et des pantalons longs ? 😮 RugbyWorldCup

It's their culture, it's their choice and decision.

My house my rules That’s the problem with society now a days, enter other countries respect the rules and their cultures.

But what if you wanna join the Yakuza?!

standard. I have japanese style tattoos and i would wear long sleeves if i were to visit. Its becoming less of a taboo over there, but the yakuza are a real thing and businesses do not want to be associated with them.

There’s a big difference between ‘told to’ and ‘advised’. Do you think welsh people look like Yakuza?

Shouldn’t they learn to embrace other cultures and people, like everyone else has to?

Why?

Tattoophobia

no
