The UK is continuing to lobby the US to help fund a new and controversial nuclear warhead, which would take the nuclear special relationship to 'new heights'.

"There is a question there", says Lord Darroch, British ambassador to Washington 2016-2019, "the democrats were quite critical of it, questioning the need for a re-designed warhead when they were in opposition, and they're going to look at it again now and it may be a while before we see the outcome of that".

The UK effort in Washington has sought to convince people of the W93 project's urgency even though it is not required by the US Navy until the late 2030s. Currently the UK has just under 200 warheads that were introduced in the 1990s under the codename Holbrook. "Our warheads have to match theirs exactly, in terms of flight performance, in order to remain certified", one figure from this secret world says, explaining a UK decision early in 2020 to replace the Holbrook.

There is no special relationship, US just using UK as a satellite nation untill it nolonger needs it. UK voted in about for Brexit I wonder how quick it would want to be an other State of USA. It knows more about the USA then it neighbours across the North Sea

There is no special relationship - also the greatest threat is from technological and biological warfare. Nuclear weapons will never be used and thus a complete waste of money.

The British and their conning.

By history, Britain colonies US but now Britain begging US for help. Hmmmm 🤔

Flying nuclear submarines

Over two trillion pounds of debt. Seems like a luxury we can't afford. We might of been a wealthy nation once but we're dropping through the charts now.

I note that your ridiculous, inflammatory headline appears in your article, attributed to an 'official'. Does Tufton Street pay you to put out this garbage, chuckling about obscenely expensive, deadly toys, or are you owned by them?

Can I sue you for presenting an absurd, partisan spin as 'news'?

the U.K. does not need nuclear weapons. Spend the money on conventional forces if need be but not WMD.

Only replace it if we have full unilateral control over it. It should be there for our independence.

What relationship? Only applies when it suits them

‘New Depths’ surely, given submarines aren’t known for their flying abilities.

Money can buy you love.

I owe you an apology to ever doubt your sincerity and professionalism. It’s was just like a dream to me when I received my first payment. After my second payment it became a reality now after several payments it has become a way of life. SamuelEddy_

There is no and never has been its allways been about $$$

And apparently we can afford this. Silly little clowns.

This really isn’t about defence. It’s about wanting a national phallic symbol to maintain the pretence we’re still a world power.

Absolutely unnecessary, the submarines are still just as deadly as they ever were and as far as I'm aware you still only need one to start a nuclear war. Nobody wins

I’ve talked to Americans about the special relationship. They say “What?”

... and depths

How does a submarine help keep us safe if Johnny Bomber one day decides to go down to B&Q, gets what he needs to build a bomb, and walks into a bar and detonates it? That's the imminent threat.

Why did the UK agree to this arrangement in the first place? Now it's tied to the vicissitudes of US politics and forced to lobby the Americans. If that's what the 'special relationship' means, surely the UK is better off without.

That special relationship is so special that only one side knows about it

Why spend money on an outdated weapons system to threaten other countries and never helps our national security stop trident stop HS2 use the money to balance the books of this tragic pandemic

More like 'new depths of subservience'.

Recently my friend's baby was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia & needs a stem cell transplant. Jason & his wife are first-time parents caring for a sick baby & could use some help. If you are in a place to donate or share, it would be appreciated.

I recently traveled through Sweden on a modern fast clean railway. Met well educated open minded people. Was amazed at their standard of living. Let's invest in people and infrastructure not WMD.

Small island nation refuses to accept it's place in the 21st century shocker.

Does No 10 literally write the BBC news now.

governed by a capitol building and a a stretch limousine, you really are ..Awh governable

They’ll be putting it somewhere in England soon anyway.

Get it to fuck out of Scotland.

Heights. In a submarine.

We're fucked aren't we?

Are chlorinated chickens part of the deal? 🤔

I'd go ballistic if my best friends treated me like that.

Great we can trust USA 🇺🇸 with such a huge power, just good to know who the true allies are.

What a farce this relationship is totally one way

Depths. It goes into a submarine ffs.

Surely they should be plumbing depths?

Fundamental design flaw in a submarine. Glad it was caught early.

Parody right ?

Scrap it

I'll bet it will. Considering the US are the ones supplying the hardware and we are the ones providing the cash. Nothing pleases a yank more than when you buy weapons from him.

Great! Do it.

With sincerity and gratitude in my heart I’m doing this testimony so other people will know that this platform is real and legit, I’m grateful markdonaldAmel

What about Texas BBC?

It's sad when you have to buy a friendship
