Rapid Covid testing being trialled at universities - which could help students in England get home for Christmas

In England, more than 200,000 students will be moving home from universities in London, 235,000 will be travelling out of the south east, 120,000 out of the north west, 123,000 out of Yorkshire and Humber and 120,000 from the West Midlands.Students in Scotland have protested about how they are being treated in the pandemic

In Scotland, Education Secretary John Swinney has suggested a staggered end of term and has not ruled out students being kept in universities over the break, if "we have a situation where the virus has not been controlled". Using a nose and throat swab, the tests would be self-administered and would not need a laboratory to process the results. The Department for Health and Social Care says the aim of the pilots would be to "turn around rapid results within an hour at the location of the test".

Once students have been safely removed from university in December there will then be questions about how they can be brought back in January, without triggering another wave of campus outbreaks.

BBCPolitics Do 19 year olds really need to be tested for a virus that is only fatal to people of an average age of 82? It's becoming more obvious that it's not just about covid anymore.

BBCPolitics 367 deaths from COVID19 in last 24 hours - highest level since 27th May, 5 months ago. Big news right? Try to find any mention on website!!!

Can’t believe I am reading that universities in Scotland may switch to all online teaching after Christmas - my daughter is a postgraduate student EdinburghUni and still hasn’t had any face to face teaching this semester let alone after Christmas!! Accom’n costs for nothing!

Students....read the small print. Join the resistance ❤️✌️

If their course is fully online why doesn't isolating and testing take place now and send them home NOW leaving only those with the virus isolating + the students whose course includes practicals. Will cut the risk of infection for staff students+locals. Or is it all about money

And who exactly is going to try and stop them there going home anyway you have no legal right

Go to uni, get a degree, find out that decent jobs for the average (non privileged) Joe don't exist, end up in Tesco.

Bloody overrated, commercial Christmas is coming soon. Oh joy 🙄

The problem with a mass student exodus from universities like Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle is that the virus - hopefully by then in decline in the North - would then re-surge in their home areas. So this must be handled with the greatest caution.

Great news 👍

Christ, they are the ones who infected local people and closed down local businesses, then they go home to the country to mummy and daddy! Come on bbc!

They’re going to go home anyway, if parents don’t want them to then that’s their prerogative, they can’t lock them up and if they tried with my daughter I’d just go down there and break in through the windows if necessary.

The testing has been proven to be useless. Our kids ARE coming home. Nobody can or will stop them. ✌️❤️

Marry Crismas!

Just remember their are students who dont have homes to go back to. Not every student has parents they can rely on 🙄😒 some dont have a choice but to stay in halls. They rely on them. More insensitive politicising of issues 🤦🏼‍♂️

They should of been tested before they left home in the first place.......

Make up your mind BBC you said masks are ineffective!

Testing for what?

Better not have Dido 'Failure ' Harding in charge. She couldn't run a bath without f. it up

Why would free citizens not get home Christmas?

Students actually being able to come home and be with their parents at Christmas shouldn’t even be something that is in doubt.

And the operational FPR for such 'testing' is what exactly?

Sweden

Or they could just leave as normal, since they’re not being forcibly kept inside? 🤷🏼‍♂️

watch it fail

Rapid tests with more than 85% false positive rates as admitted by Dominic Raab live on TV. No wonder most test centers are deserted and apps deleted. 😅
