Andy Newport manned the phones with concerns growing over Michael Beale's successor.

United Kingdom News, United Kingdom Headlines

It’s looking increasingly like a straight shootout between Kevin Muscat and Philippe Clement in the race to replace Michael Beale. But Gordon Blackwell, Glasgow, reckons the Ibrox top brass should hold their horses for now, saying: “Rangers should wait until January to appoint a new manager and allow Steven Davis to stay in place until then and see how he does. Bringing a new man in, at this time, would mean he would be stuck with the disastrous signings made by Beale.

Record Sport this week revealed Ibrox legend Graeme Souness has been helping the Gers directors wade through the application letters. But Sam Morton, Edinburgh , said: “So Souness is the brains behind the hunt for the next Rangers manager? This is hardly a guarantee of success given this is the man once tricked into signing someone he believed was George Weah’s cousin. Maybe he’ll hire Pep Guardiola’s ‘brother’.

The jokes were coming thick and fast, with Kenny Wilson, Moffat, calling to say: “I was in the supermarket the other day and a wee woman had three big bags of shopping so I said can you manage and she replied, ‘Yes but I’m not taking the Rangers job!’ But Chris Lowe, Yoker, wasn’t in a laughing mood as he said: “A caller yesterday said Rangers got their mandatory penalty against St Mirren which incidentally is our first this season and two less than Celtic.

“I did notice however that Celtic got their now ‘mandatory’ dodgy VAR decision that have been so prevalent this season and allowed their second goal against Killie to stand despite Reo Hatate being offside.”
