Health Secretary Mr Hancock said: "I firmly believe we can go further and improve quality, instil the highest food safety standards and, ultimately, improve patients' recoveries.""Staff shouldn't have to resort to crisps from a vending machine to keep them going on a long shift. Our plans will ensure they have access to healthy, tasty food as well as the facilities to prepare their own," Mr Hancock wrote.
The review said introducing digital menus and food ordering systems which factor in a patient's needs could improve communication between dieticians and caterers, reduce food waste and provide patients with the right food for recovery. Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of Leon Restaurants and independent lead on the National Food Strategy, said hospitals must be a "guiding light" in efforts to "get to grips with the slow-motion disaster that is the British diet".
NHS chief executive Sir Simon Stevens said "every meal that patients get in hospital should be appetising and nutritious" and added that the NHS should play its part in tackling the nation's obesity crisis.
Haven’t we been talking about this for years. Why hasn’t this happened yet?
What next for Prue Leith - Damehood? House of Lords?
Hasn’t jamieoliver tried this one 🤔
Does she think they all have big kitchens and staff to do this?
Then why don’t they?
Read the room love 🙄🙄.
Oh look, another celebrity, to overhaul food in hospital. Just give the NHS more money to serve better nutritious food and stop paying these people.
Clueless.
Wonder if tory supporter PrueLeith agrees, with Marcus Rashfords feed the children campaign, or does, she support the Tory government policy of let the children go hungry
Good luck but please not 24 hour service in wards causing food smells all day and night when you are ill and on strong medication it can make you gag or worse
Tory Prue Leith has no credibility because she's failed to condemn the Conservatives for starving children!
I've literally spent the last 3 years mostly in hospital and I can tell you that 'delicious food' is not a priority. Well rested, cared for staff who are paid a proper wage is what needs sorting. Ta!
Who knew
Calling Planet Lovie. Calling Planet Lovie. You do know the Tories just tried to starve poor children during the October Holidays.
Many have tried, all have failed.
It can also be a lot healthier - last time I was there it was shockingly high fat / high sugar stuff on offer. Hospitals need to lead by good example, and show patients that healthy food can be tasty and filling too.
Why don’t they then?
Yes my father used to do it admirably. Catering manager until he lost tender to private company. The stress that tender caused him every two years would have contributed to his cancer. He died age 63. Worked for nhs over 40 years
wasting money on tech solutions and celebrities. if tech is to be involved its using vertical farming/aeroponics/aquaponics/hydroponics to grow the food they need.
Good luck with that Prue, ever seen what the NHS food budget is per patient? - around 80p max, if I'm wrong someone please do correct me. I very much doubt you'll pull this off like Lloyd Grossman couldn't with the prison food.
I doubt Prue understands something called 'scaling up', you can make the most amazing food in the world, but if it can't be scaled up, what's the point of making it?
Great. More money being transferred to the families of Tory MPs. Shameless thieves
Perhaps they can forage for apples.
It would be a bonus if it was delicious but it just needs to be nutritious and well cooked. Shouldn’t be that hard.
The NHS already *was* serving delicious, healthy food b4 the Tories. I hope Ipswich Hospital still is!
Meanwhile on planet blipblap...
Which company has the contracts for provisioning and supplying hospital food services?
This is done every decade or so. Last time it was Lloyd Grossman.
People on ventilators can’t eat!
It's not the NHS any more who MAKES the food, it's ALL outsourced and has been for years and years.
Does that include chlorinated chicken hey PrueLeith ? You know the food type your son danny__kruger refused to ensure couldn’t enter our food chain in case of a US trade deal? All because you all love Brexit so much.
Delicious? People who are unwell need highly nutritious food that is easy to serve and eat.
Prue Leigh gave me a bj
They are not hotels on tripadvisor🙄 and it’s free people just want it all now!
Here she is, Prue(made up name)Leith. Specialist subject: Everything. Shes like a 1970’s throwback. A Mrs Slocombe come back to haunt us🐈
Please make it stop. If my eyes roll much further I’ll be able to see behind me🙄
Is she applying for a job in the kitchen...
Food at My recent hospital stays was inedible
We've had these celebrity chefs / cooks make similar statements before to a whirl of publicity and what really changed? Nothing. In the end it comes down to money.
Her idea of food on a budget is entirely different to most people's actual reality. She lives in a multi million pound house & earns millions of pounds a year!
I had a sandwich & a brew, the sandwich was really fresh i was expecting stale.another had vegetable soup & that looked fab, apparently tasted fab too.wasnt Jamie Oliver who was going to change nhs food like never before.prue don't do it you'll ruin ur cred
Better equipped chefs than her have tried this in the past, it's another private sector failure.
Good food is down to cooking skill. If you want better food then you need to pay higher salaries to attract talented staff.
Just more toryscum talking shite
Let’s hope they actually sort it out. Hospital food is the WORST. It’s never healthy, doesn’t aid recovery and often doesn’t even suit the dietary needs of the patient as recommended by their own Doctors 🤦🏼♀️
Really I mean Really. They just can't help themselves can they. Tory Brexiteers milking our money through the system of entitlement. Son a Tory MP friend of Cummings and Johnson. Lock um up drain the swamp!
I’d like to see the part when she has to bag up a load of loose change so she can put £5 on her electric meter
Completely bored with 'celebrity' having a dig at the NHS. If you want to bitch about, go join the queue from your private hospital.
Truth be known, when you're in hospital, you're often not that hungry.🤮🤢
What did the others in the long line of top chefs and TV Appearance Addicts do for hospital food? Did they poison everyone? This is another celebrity gravy train.
Excellent! when we're in hospital at Christmas with Covid19 we can have cake that looks like a ventilator.
Huh....? The NHS has been providing often delicious food on a budget for years. No Trust has a blank cheque- there’s always a budget
she'll know, an expert on cheap meals for the poor. typical tory cost-cutter
typical old blue rinse tory, cost-cutting for the poorest pink gins and caviar for Harley street and BUPA
Please go away. Another one looking for a privatisation deal for exclusive access to patient food. Jog on..
Didn’t she have a row with her son who’s a Tory MP I’ve children’s meals
No thanks. She's a Brexiter, wouldn't trust her opinion.
Vile woman
Prue Leith launching this Govt hospital food campaign today alongside Matt Hancock. But yesterday it was reported she had quit the Tory party in protest at lower food standards caused by Brexit. Why didn't Dan Walker ask Hancock to clarify on BBCBreakfast?
Cake
Backed Brexit though, didn't she... oh well, gruel for all and lights out at 7pm.. run along peasants.
Oh look a Tory MP's mum getting paid by the Tory's... Because right at this point in time we can all agree Hospital food in the most important thing to change... No need to panic about he Dr and Nurse numbers... We can just add more student🤫. Drip theory working perfectly.
Pru Leith can get stuffed
Yes apparently fish heads will make excellent food supplements when we have Covid/ no deal food rationing- yay?
someone who thinks hospitals still have their own canteens says food will be great
Pru is a Tory. Nobody is listening.
I agree , perhaps they should help these hungry children’s Mums how to do it.
It's been 5 years since I was last in hospital, the dinners they gave me were healthy and delicious. I think they liked me as I'd often be allowed second helping of veggies as no one else on the ward wanted them. When you've just had a baby and are bleeding, get them extra greens
Presumably through lucrative private contracts with companies owned by her sons mates.
My Dad spent 8 days in Gloucester Royal and the food was appalling. A major factor in his digestive system going awry which took weeks to recover and upset him greatly. It’s scandalous.
Prue , have you ever heard of RJAH_NHS , we have been winning awards for the quality of our food for years . Our patients and staff are extremely grateful to are catering manager ( also award winning ) and the whole of the catering team .
I was in four different hospitals over a six month period 3 years ago, the food was excellent in all of them. I actually miss the curry from UCLH in London!
Think that’s the last thing on their minds
Then offer your services free of charge and help them. Show them how.
Serving good food isn’t hard finding good cheap chefs is
They do, sorry if the caviar wasn't upto scratch.
They need to bring back cooking in house, instead of this cook chill rubbish. Canteens need to be open 24/7 for staff.
Why don't they then?
Who is this woman and why are the BBC promoting her?
Cooked in house like it used to be years ago and as a result cheaper and healthier most likely.
But they don’t...
Luckily we will have that £350M bonus bs from Wrexit you voted for to up the standard.
I have to agree in some things and wouldn't say delicious but healthier. I've been twice at the hospital and the food is really bad, they offer sandwiches, jacked potatoes, ice cream and jelly. I'm other European countries they offer hospital menu food, healthier n lighther
I was in hospital recently and the food was top notch. They even came round the day before and took orders.
tory Prue Leith:
Sounds great unfortunately a lot of us are without jobs as a result of the lockdown I’m sure she’s a wonderful cook while the bureaucrats continue to be paid They feel no effect from the economic conditions that the average person lives under
Another case of ill-informed pundit jumping on the entitled bandwagon.
Hospital food was pretty good in my experience. I could do with a cake and tea fairy in my life.
I hope they will begin serving tarts baked in decorative pastry cages.
Didn't Jamie Oliver say exactly the same thing, tried, failed and then his restaurants went bust? Just asking for a friend!
Very little detail on what the recommendations are other than upgrade kitchens, move to a 24x7 service with digital ordering Which all sounds very expensive- is the government going to invest in upgrading facilities, systems & increase staff
I’m sure they ain’t looking for a Michelin star munch. Let’s get the priorities right Prue
How much was she paid for this? Another job and pay reward to a high profile Brexit loyalist.
Isn't it contractors who serves the meals?
Pot noodles
What about non GMO ?
Fake news
the spectre of airline food lurks ever closer
