Sterling sank earlier in the day to $1.2396, the first time it had dipped below $1.24 since March 2017, and below the"flash crash" rate of $1.2409 of 3 January this year.The plunge also marked a six-month low against the euro, falling 0.5% to 90.47p.
An already weakening sterling was compounded by a rise in the dollar following strong US retail sales data on Tuesday.During the final Tory leadership debate on Monday, both Boris Johnson and rival Jeremy Hunt said they would reject the so-called Northern Irish backstop element of Theresa May's Brexit deal, in a bid to appeal to the Tory party members who want a clean break from the EU.for up to a fortnight in October if he becomes prime minister.
