Post Office worker ‘wrongly jailed over £59,000 fraud caused by computer glitch’ after selling home to payback cash

A POST Office worker was wrongly jailed over £59,000 of fraud caused by a computer glitch which she sold her house to pay off.

“As soon as the audit took place I was suspended and then I was taken to Bransholme police station for an informal interview which quickly turned formal with no legal representation. In prison she insisted she did nothing wrong and was placed of suicide watch for three weeks. Janet was released after two and a half months but the trauma continued as she had an £11,500 compensation order, so she sold her house and assumed they got the money as she received nothing. She said: “I immediately rang the warrant office who told me I hadn’t paid. It turned out there was a large penalty for selling the property when there was much of the mortgage still to pay so the compensation order hadn’t been paid.

“My immune system was really low and my body began to attack itself. I was told I may never walk again but I fought hard to recover. However, I have been left with permanent disabilities.'DESTROYED PEOPLE'S LIVES' Janet realised she was not alone when she saw televised the case of fellow postmaster Seema Misra, who was two-months' pregnant when sentenced to 15 months in 2010 for stealing £74,000 from her West Byfleet branch.

She took part in a BBC Panorama investigation, broadcast this week, which spent months scrutinising previously unseen evidence.
