When he first started work on La Gioia, Pomellato’s first-ever high jewellery collection, creative director Vincenzo Castaldo decided to take stock. “For me, this new adventure was beyond a creative challenge. It has been a process of awareness, to be even more aware of our identity, to underline our aesthetic codes,” Castaldo explains on the phone from Casa Pomellato, the brand’s Milan headquarters.
La Gioia di Pomellato’s Nudo Collier Plastron in pink gold with diamonds and frosted topazes lined with iridescent mother-of-pearl. At Pomellato, colour has long been a leitmotif. It is a theme that finds its most vivid expression in Castaldo’s Gourmette Caméléon choker necklace, which the designer nicknames “our superstar”. The piece is comprised of 29 yellow gold links, each one pavé-set with coloured stones. A staggering 1,798 stones – among them Zambian emeralds, sapphires from Madagascar and Sri Lankan spinels – make up 27 nuanced shades assembled in a harmonious sequence.
During Italy’s nationwide lockdown earlier this year, Casa Pomellato remained shut for three months. Returning finally to the brand’s workshops, it was his finished Gourmette Caméléon that Castaldo first laid eyes on. In design and make-up, the multi-coloured necklace, which Castaldo says is his favourite jewel in the collection, pays tribute to a second Pomellato speciality: chains. Ever since the brand’s launch more than 50 years ago, chains have been part of its USP.
