Isn’t their principle purpose to stop the wearer getting splashed in the eyes when doing close up work like dentistry or beauty treatments? Somewhere along the way someone thought they would help stop a person spreading their breath around but they are open on sides and bottom.
It should be pretty obvious that they don't work, e.g. in the image above, much of the breath and any bugs is being directed down to the poor soul sitting in the chair.

RitaPanahi N95 and P100 don't even completely work. Don't even talk about the cloth, medical, or surgical masks. Those things are a joke and likely result in a higher transmission rate.
