New rules around Covid testing come into force today 🧪 Now, those who test positive on a lateral flow but don’t have Covid symptoms no longer need to take a follow-up PCR.

The move aims to free up capacity for the UK’s PCR test labs, which have been stretched by Omicron

A surge in cases fuelled by the highly infectious Omicron variant means many with positive lateral flows have struggled to book a follow-up PCR. The UK Health Security Agency said it is a temporary measure while Covid-19 rates remain high across the UK. The need for a confirmatory PCR was suspended between January and March 2021 at a time when cases were high and labs under more pressure.
