PC Andrew Harper married his childhood sweetheart Lissie four weeks before he was killed
The Ministry of Justice said it would aim to pass Harper's Law in England and Wales "as soon as possible".would introduce mandatory life sentences for those who kill on-duty emergency workers while committing a crime. He had become entangled in a strap attached to a getaway vehicle as he tried to deal with three quad bike thieves. After his death, Mrs Harper said she had found herself in a "lost and endless world of numb despair".
Mrs Harper, from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, said it had been a "long journey" but her late husband "would be proud to see Harper's Law reach this important milestone"."I know all too well how they are put at risk and into the depths of danger on a regular basis on behalf of society. Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "PC Andrew Harper's killing was shocking. As well as a committed police officer, he was a husband and a son.
It’s about time, us police officers demand more respect, this recognition that our lives are more valuable than the public’s is long overdue and a start at least
Everyone’s life is valuable, surely
Wrong so fkn wrong
Government PR exercise. Why don't we have harsher sentences for those that kill children and lenient sentences for those that kill tramps and beggers. Either all lives are equal or not at all. Utter rubbish.
Well done to his partner 🌹🌹
So, is manslaughter no longer manslaughter now? If the 3 men convicted of manslaughter had been convicted of murder they’d have got Life; so why does the law need to change? And does it apply in reverse if a member of the public is murdered by a member of the emergency services?
That’s beautiful!! I wish they would pass this law in US . Unfortunately, too much politics here , we forgot what’s important .
Did you drop the news about the Health and Care Bill down the back of the filing Cabinet? Did you drop it on the loo floor? Did the dog eat your homework=ie EMBARGOED? In 1999 I was an unpaid BBC intern. I wouldn't work for you now if you paid me!
Hi, BBC, you seem to have mislaid the News AGAIN: OOPS! 'Disastrous NHS Bill passes 3rd reading 294 to 244. Only hope Lords do better - services must be delivered publicly not by US health giants with an NHS logo. Let’s scrapnhsbill & replace with laws to protect NHS forever!'
This case was tragic but surely anyone who kills someone should get punished properly anyway regardless of their victim.
Great victory for Mrs Harper! The Law needs to be firm with vicious criminals and act as a deterrent to crime.
